He's thanked the prime minister Nikolai Denkov for Bulgaria's military support, which he said had saved many Ukrainian lives. This #Balkan country - once a close satellite of the #Soviet Union - took a pro-Western course after the fall of communism. But #Moscow ’s influence didn’t go away - and the war in #Ukraine highlighted the strength of pro- #Russian feelings in this #Nato country, prompting questions about its Euro-Atlantic loyalty.
The road through the Osum Valley to the Osum Canyon stretched out. It went endlessly up and again down to the river. Early in the morning on the 24th March 1914 two trains arrived at the Railway station in #Belgrade carrying the first generation of recruits from the newly liberated regions, Old #Serbia and Southern Serbia. After the official reception, the recruits headed via central city streets towards the barracks in the Upper Town of Kalemegdan Fortress.
Around midday we both dreamed of eating pommes... In this lost region there is no restaurant, no bar, no supermarket, no kiosk or farmersmarket. We are #cycling past more graveyards (often very old and derelicted, or where they devasted?) than hamlets. And then, Marc shoutet 'patatoes'! Stopped his bike and asked if we should collect some leftover potatoes from the harvested field.
