‘Dramatic’ acceleration: Switzerland has lost 10% of its glaciers in the last two years

Glaciers across the entire country were affected, with those in southern and eastern Switzerland melting almost as much this year as in the record year of 2022.

Some glacial rivers are turning toxic. Here’s why.
Rory Burford: "When you think of climate change and glaciers, you probably think of melting. But in the Peruvian Andes, that's only half the problem. My PhD project looks at why the rivers are turning acidic and filling up with toxic heavy metals."

Volume lost during hot summers of 2022 and 2023 equal to total depletion between 1960 and 1990, says report

Glaciers in Switzerland are disappearing at a “mind-blowing” pace, the Swiss Academy of Sciences says. In just two years, the glaciers have shrunk 10%, the same amount of ice loss experienced over the three-decade period between 1960 and 1990. Matthias Huss, head of the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network, says this acceleration “would have been impossible without climate change.”

Melting Alps ❄️

The Swiss have lost 10% of their volume in just 2 years, due to unusually hot summers and winters with very low snow volume.

The rate at which small glaciers are melting is alarming. Even with global warming limited to 1.5oC, 's glacier volume is expected to be only a third of what it currently is. This highlights the severity of the and the need for immediate action to mitigate its impact.

Record low Antarctic sea ice coverage indicates a new sea ice state
"Here, we show the confluence of Southern Ocean subsurface warming & record minima and suggest that ocean warming has played a role in pushing Antarctic sea ice into a new low-extent state. In addition, this new state exhibits different seasonal persistence characteristics, suggesting that the underlying processes controlling Antarctic sea ice coverage may have altered."

The CBC has a long form report on the eventual end of the Peyto Glacier in Alberta's Glacier Parkway. This is the reference glacier for this beautiful area, but it is rapidly melting in a warming climate. The water from the glaciers in the Glacier Parkway acts as a reservoir for Alberta, and if they are gone, it is a big problem. https://www.cbc.ca/newsinteractives/features/the-canary-in-the-icefield
