In honor of and the I’m posting our two feline sisters, litter-mates that couldn’t be more different. They share coloration, but literally nothing else. One is a long-hair, chill, slow-moving couch potato; the other is a short-hair, hyperactive, mischief maker intent on escaping out the door - even though both enjoy a large ‘catio’ on our family room deck. So meet Safi, short for Saffron; and her sister Coco. Coco is the long-hair.

Took my 12 y.o. grandson to his first live symphony performance last Saturday, it was a learning experience. The conductor and symphony board decided on a “challenging” program of 19th Century Czech composers in two parts, the first featuring a trumpet concerto - which I thought would be a perfect intro for my grandson. Though good, it was not the program I expected. I had to explain to my grandson that though there is a large corpus of really beautiful classical music, sometimes orchestras choose to perform more challenging or experimental pieces. A shame IMO. There exists, after all, bad classical music - let’s face it. Of course I’m opinionated (I’m sure you’re not surprised), and I personally think any classical piece written after say 1840 is suspect and most are rubbish. Aficionados would argue that modernist classical music simply reflects the times; discordant, busy and brassy. I argue that is not classical music’s job.

Been on Mastodon for a year now, a birdsite refugee fleeing Musk’s shitshow. Today, I blocked my first account, took a full year - some sort of record imo. Sheesh, I was blocking 1 account/day on - quite the difference. I knew my earlier post today regarding occupied Palestine would get some hate, and I wasn’t wrong. I recognize the issue is contentious, but it is personal for me. The inherent injustice of the situation is obvious, but in my case it is compounded by the loss of an associate by assassination in 1985. Christian American citizen Alex Odeh, a colleague, was assassinated sitting in his own office in Santa Ana, Calif. The murderer fled to Israel, where he shelters to this day. Odeh’s crime? Saying Israel should consider negotiating with their Palestinian counterparts. For that he died at the hands of an assassin. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Odeh?wprov=sfti1

It is sad and disappointing to see war break out and the loss of life in occupied . Hamas may have started this war, but not without reason and ample provocation imo. is an state that encourages the illegal seizure of land, violent attacks by settlers on local , and provocative incursions at . They stystematically dehumanize and disrespect their Palestinian neighbors with checkpoints, walls, and land seizures. It’s long past time, imo, for the world and the US specifically to call out these breaches of Int’l law and impose sanctions on the Israeli state. In 2007, I wrote a post about how we should allow Israel to stand on its own, without US support. http://popimpulse.blogspot.com/2012/11/it-is-time-to-let-israel-stand-on-its.html

Bloomberg is reporting that consumer debt unexpectedly declined $15.6 billion in August, which could be interpreted as a good, or a bad thing depending on its cause and the consequences. Let me explain, reducing consumer/household debt is a good thing in most cases - unless it signals consumer concerns and a withdrawal from the market as purchasers sit on the sidelines. Something similar is happening rn in China as consumers quite borrowing and buying. That’s the negative view. If consumers quit borrowing and buying, growth slows and the tanks.
