My issues with , and why I still currently prefer :

  • It's XML everywhere
  • The session-management system is inferior to what matrix has with session ids and security keys
  • The closest you can get to a web client is ConverseJS, which is really underwhelming, especially since it uses bootstrap (the css framework) and doesn't even support dark theme :(
  • XMPP has already fallen of a cliff in terms of popularity, and it's only getting worse, meanwhile matrix is thriving.

I'm delighted to announce that #Libervia has received a new grant from #NLnet #NGI0 to develop an #email <=> #XMPP gateway.

This project will not only convert normal messages but also transform mailing lists into #pubsub based forums. It includes UI/UX enhancements on Libervia, end-to-end encryption, and advanced handling of attachments.

The gateway is finished barring a few bugs, I'm currently preparing a release, that should come hopefully withing 2 weeks.

A few people are using it already.

You don't need to install any Libervia frontend to use it. Instructions are at https://libervia.org/__b/doc/backend/components.html and you may ask for help at XMPP room xmpp:libervia@chat.jabberfr.org?join (I may lag for answering, as I'm really busy with release preparation).

The federation model of #ActivityPub is based on random chance. Yes, being on a larger instance increases your chances that you can see all replies in a thread but it doesn’t guarantee it.

We have already nearly everything with : posts, rich contents, multi-levels comments, repeat, edit, reactions, like/seen, deletion, attachments, mentions.

The main things we are probably lacking for modern social network are trolls and advertisements. For those I can't do much for, but for everything else that may be lacking, just ask, and I might implement it.

@debacle @me_the_fl00f @daniel @edhelas that's true that we don't have many tools beside edit/deletion, but that's also because we haven't had too much annoyance so far, I guess we'll develop them when needed.

I'm thinking about having a way to plug external tools to Libervia Pubsub at node/items level, to do things like spam detection for instance.

As I've said above, if something is lacking, just ask/open a ticket. I'll do my best to have all required tools.

I'm really surprised there isn't at least one #XMPP client that's compatible on all (most) platforms, like how #Matrix has #Element.

I think #Snikket attempts to bridge this gap, but uses different client sources for different platforms, so it lacks unity between clients.

Does anybody have some insider news as to whether or not something like this is in the works? Perhaps a shiny new #XMPP client?

@pavot It's one of the goal of (I'm the main dev). It works on desktop (natively), on the web, and there is an Android port but it's not yet usable. Windows and Mac OS version are planned, and iOS would be doable, however I'm not sure about the possibility to publish AGPL on Apple Store. It also has a TUI and a CLI frontends.

@John_Livingston @erikkemp @NGIZero @axbom You can actually put directly in the tree as there is now the AP <=> XMPP (that I've authored thanks to a / discovery grant): https://libervia.org/__b/doc/backend/components.html#activitypub-gateway .

It would fit "networking", "events", and "writing" branches, and potentially "multimedia".

I've just pushed A/V call commands to the frontend of . I believe that it's the only CLI to date with calling capabilities (make and receive calls).

This complete and () implementations.

All thanks to / Assure grant (and hard work!).

Still need some stabilisation work, hopefully will be ready for incoming release.

For the past few weeks, I worked on a new project: !
1999 aims to be an XMPP client that is:

  1. and
  2. cross-platform (mobile and desktop)
  3. modern looking, with a uniform look across platforms
  4. user-friendly
  5. secure

The goal is to have an xmpp client that has the same name, ui and features on every platform, which I believe is what xmpp lacks right now.

I am not a programmer so this is only a UI at the moment!

is actually also targeting to work on any platform, and has notably a (unique I believe) multi-frontends feature, with web, desktop, mobile, CLI, and TUI frontends (there's even been an one).

Furthermore I'm stabilizing the backend <=> frontend API so third party frontends can be done easily, can be an option for your project.

@ailyaut @kris D-Bus is used for communication between backend and frontend (can be changed to something else if necessary), thus any language which can use D-Bus (in short, any language) can be used.

    @lord les travaux sont souvent faits en été justement parce qu'il y a moins de monde (les transport parisiens par exemple c'est souvent compliqué en juillet/août).

    Honnêtement tant mieux si ça gêne plus les touristes que les gens qui y vivent.
