I'm a science fiction and fantasy writer. I like robots and dragons, silliness and literature.

Used to be an academic; may get too deep into analytic philosophy unexpectedly.

It's and I've added new designs to my Redbubble store in celebration.

I've adapted my Infinite Cubes design to reflect the colours of various flags: Progressive Pride, Transgender, Agender, Asexual, Aromantic, Bi, Pan, Genderqueer, Genderfluid, Intersex, Non-binary, Lesbian, Gay Men, and Polyamory.

Where possible, I've included variations. If I'm missing a flag you'd like to see cubed, let me know!

https://www.redbubble.com/people/Rhube/shop?asc=u

A throw pillow on a grey sofa. The pillow cover is of tessellating cubes with the visible surfaces each a flat colour of black, yellow, purple, or white - the colours of the non-binary pride flag.
A phone case with a design of tessellating yellow cubes outlined in purple, the colours of the intersex pride flag.
An art board propped up for display by a potted plant. It features tessellating cubes with the visible surfaces each a colour from the lesbian pride flag: white and shades of orange, pink, and purple.

I've been thinking of finally reading some Stephen King, but no idea where to start.

Go for one of the likes of his famous work, like the Shining or the Green Mile? Or something lesser known?

Unsure how common this is in other affecting cognition, but when you have the writing errors you’re almost guaranteed to make are:

  1. Double the same word
    or
  2. Exclude it altogether
    Or do both!

So frustrating & the sicker you are the worse it gets. You simply can’t see mistakes! Other problems too ofc but I’ve found this is the most common error made by

I did both when composing this!

I miss my old brain!

@halcionandon @mecfs @longcovid @chronicillness those aren't my common errors, but I certainly do make a lot of them these days - heartbreaking for a writer and editor.

I get livid when people critique me for them - especially from within the disability community. Some people seem to treat me like I'm offering a professional service and should do better to retain their custom. Like, no, I am real sick. If the errors are so bad you can't read my post I do not have the spoons to deal w/your shit.

Help me identify this thing I own.

I do not know where it came from.

My best guess is that it could be for flattening large eyelets??

Incidentally, if any local bod accidentally left this at mine, you can have it back.

I would give it to charity, but I doubt they'd know what to do with it. It's pretty solid and would be a waste to throw out.

[Edit:] question answered - apparently it is for eyelets.

Throwing this out into the ether on the off-chance:

I have a Green Power Electric Boot Scooter BH220. I need to remove the battery. Green Power won't tell me how as they want to charge for an engineer to come out.

It has a handle and I'm meant to be able to take it inside to charge it. I was shown how to remove it when I first got it, but I can't remember. I can lift w/handle, but it feels stuck at the front end. How do I release it?

Idea:

Bookstores should group fantasy with horror instead of scifi. Both fantasy and horror are purely creations of the author's mind; scifi is tethered to factual information.

If you need to group scifi, I'd put it with mysteries and thrillers.

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@Uair @bookstodon hogwash.

SF and F are grouped together because they are speculative - they answer the question 'what if?' - which horror can also do, and that's why it is already frequently grouped with them. But SF is not fundamentally more rooted in facts than fantasy. That's a mistake along the same lines as supposing fantasy can't be realistic simply because it contains the fantastic. SF's questions are rooted in science, but it's every bit as capable of becoming divorced from facts.>

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@Uair @bookstodon >and the idea it's close to mystery is just damn strange.

This is just the weird, gatekeeping idea that SF is somehow 'superior' and shouldn't be sullied by fantasy. It's not just nonsense, it's harmful nonsense.

Meghan Markle looking radiant as she visits Nigeria.🇳🇬♥️

Sometimes I get sad thinking about what could have been, and how many deep wounds could have been healed. I can see a world where we can all say "imperialism was bad, slavery was bad, colonialism was bad, and exploiting smaller countries for their natural resources is bad. Let's choose to do better."

When I think about which royals could bridge our current world with that better world, I think of Harry and Meghan.

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@mekkaokereke They're better off out, and (speaking as a citizen of the kingdom) we're better off having royals who choose to leave. I do understand that power of the image, but you can't heal imperialism from within a monarchy. They made the right choice to leave - an important choice. The sad thing is who remains. But it is a chink in the armour. A sign that even those born to royalty can see that it's wrong.

I would love to get your thoughts and feedback on my from my latest book, The Challenges of Being Me. Do you like it? Does it capture your attention? Without knowing anything about the book, what genre would you say this cover best fits? @bookstodon

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@dickrubin716 @noodlemaz @willaful @benetnasch @bookstodon I wouldn't go with a hand-writing font as they can be difficult to read. The font is a little plain, but not bad. It does come too close to the edges of cover, though - try to give it more space.

You could also use some blending options on the text layer to give it a little distance from the image, such as an outer glow or a drop shadow.

The image could also use a little more contrast to reduce the washed-out effect.

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@dickrubin716 @noodlemaz @willaful @benetnasch @bookstodon I think people are getting memoir because of the naturalistic photo and the person standing alone. This says that it's very much about one person's journey, rather than a YA romance. If you want to suggest romance, having more than one person on the cover would help. I can see coming of age, but the person looks a little old for that (hard to tell from the back of course, but the B&W also gives this a more mature feel).

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@dickrubin716 @noodlemaz @willaful @benetnasch @bookstodon your name also looks a little squashed over to the side. I get that you don't want it to interfere with the image, but there's just not enough space for it to sit comfortably beside the figure. I would have it on one line centred (with an outer glow or stroke effect to make it legible).

Struggling to find an answer to this question on search:

My bicycle's back wheel won't roll backwards.

It isn't that it won't spin freely exactly - it spins fine forwards. It's just that when I try to roll the bike backwards it will not turn.

It's not to do with the pedals. I am talking about just rolling it along the ground. It used to work fine.

It's not an electric bike.

What can cause this??

@franciscawrites @bookstodon The Shawshank Redemption, and I think it benefits from it. King's longer works rarely adapt in a faithful way that's also good, but being shorter enables the story to be told in full, at a good pace, with all the detail.

I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon

@weirdwriter @bookstodon that's not how I would put it. I would say that indie publishing is being buried by grifters churning out millions of stolen words, so that it's harder to find genuine indie books.

So-called 'generative-AI' isn't indie publishing - it's scam artists stealing from indie publishers, writers, and artists.

The most on-bran thing ever is that he spent his last moments critiquing a musician.
