This is why in EU funded () projects, the commission demands that a copy of every publications is ALSO archived in a repository like - and they have full guidelines as to preserving open access to science via their service.

I used to think it was a bit of a nuisance having to comply with all that requirement - surely it was obvious?

I no longer think that.

Heh, this is kind of true, but apart from the armoured giants sleeping in their tombs the (non-Royal) Danish national anthem I've always found rather poetic. It only mentions Freya, no God!
But perhaps a little warning in last couplet..?
" Denmark shall endure, as long as the beech-tree mirrors its top in the blue wave! "

QT @pluralistic - Hard to overstate how enshittified Google Maps has become. Went looking for my local locksmith. Gmaps shows 20+ fake locksmith referral scam outlets and doesn't even register the real locksmith, despite being fully visible in Street View.
Instead, a red pin on the shop identifies it as a fake locksmith scammer. The real locksmith - which has been there SINCE 1942 (!!) and is a verified merchant - doesn't even show up.

You know how I told you not to go to that webcam watching a waterhole in the Namib desert?

Well, similarly, you really shouldn't go to this partner webcam in the Etosha National Park.

I mean, who would want to waste time watching a herd of white rhinos arsing about in the night? 🤷‍♂️🙂🦏

When is an Arctic bias not an Arctic bias?

I was going to blog about this cool new paper that my colleagues at DMI have produced, but John Kennedy has as always done such a good job I will just point you over there... Wondering whether a warm bias in the Arctic in ERA5 affects our estimates of global temperature change. When is an Arctic bias not an Arctic bias?

About that ozone hole..

Doesn't seem to be healing very fast - not due to necessarily but a quirk of the system means a colder - which is delaying things.
Really good piece from my colleagues at DMI on it (in danish but DeepL works really well for translation):

Cool new @nature paper just dropped colleagues at suggesting models may have warming about right, when compared to @osi_saf data rather than

"We find that the CMIP6 simulations in the central Arctic, with generally thicker ice and snow, align well with satellite observations ... By contrast, climate reanalyses like ERA5 exhibit widespread warm biases exceeding 2 °C in the same region."

My research focuses on ice sheets and sea level rise which are often thought to be long-term and distant problems (they're actually not but that's another topic), but this is the kind of disruption that's harder to adapt to in some.ways. What happens to our food supply when Spain runs out of water?
We're (probably) not going to starve, but other people might and we're certainly going to be spending more in food

Danes are the 3rd richest population in the EU and they have the highest consumption based CO2emissions of all - 11 tonnes per Dane per year.

It's primarily food. And let's be really honest, it's primarily meat and dairy.

This is also why, as a / based household going food shopping in is an enraging experience.

Meat + dairy, especially the highly processed varieties are extremely cheap, and pre-packaged equivalents are not.

We pay 25% tax on all products in DK, even food, the local co-op challenged politicians to drop 20% across all fruit and vegetables. The health gains alone would be phenomenal. Never mind the planetary gains.

Update:
Some very interesting replies to this question
Kid asked very good question this morning: why is this fossil ammonite in a round concretion? As in how was it preserved? (I explained that in some locations you find roundish stones that when broken in half reveal a fossil ammonite or other fossil inside). But why do they form in these roundish shapes? What is the preservation method.
I no longer remember where this came from but I think, Whitby?

Haven't read this piece but the image is interesting, because it's clearly AI generated but it looks just like Icelandic glacier lagoon Jokulsarlon with Breiðamerkurjökull glacier in the background, possibly the most photographed glacier on earth. Photos of it crop up absolutely everywhere. Which is presumably how DALL-E learned what a glacier is.

It matters where the water comes from.

Why does the loss of ice in Antarctica affect Northern Europe more than melt in Greenland?

Apparently, many people are confused about how global and local sea level rise are not the same so I wrote a brief blog post to try and explain it.

Posting again for the European morning crowd..

Many years ago I saw bird of paradise flowers blooming in the magnificent Kirstenbosch botanical gardens in Cape Town. I have coveted them ever since. It is bringing much joy and a touch of South African sun to the cold northern February
