Little test here. Who will be right about the weather only a few hours from now? BBC (rain) or Met Office (cloud)? I can't understand how two forecasters, with so much technology to hand, can be so radically different so close to the event. And given how high the river levels are already in Oxford this could be an important difference.

BBC forecast showing 49% to 76% chance of rain this afternoon

Ruth_Mottram,
@Ruth_Mottram@fediscience.org avatar

@ProfLouiseL just checking - is that a real question or rhetorical? Don't want to be a reply person...

Ruth_Mottram,
@Ruth_Mottram@fediscience.org avatar

@ProfLouiseL well as a rule of thumb you should always trust the national meteorological service of the country you're in. They have spent the most time optimising models + forecasts for the local conditions. The BBC contracted out their weather services to an NZ based company who will of course have access to Met Office services and products, but it will be the Met Office that e.g. flood forecasters etc will use too. Basically for that very reason.

Posted books 6+7 on the blog.
Mariane Satrapi's beautifully observed embroideries and an investigation into the benefits of walking by a danish public health professor. Both worth a look...

Dunno what it means, but this year so far I've only read 2 books written by men? Coincidence? Probably.

But interesting nonetheless.

Can we just be clear: ONE of the co-authors who suggested this was Dutch, the other was swedish and the proposal was made to highlight the stupidity of trying to solve the problem of sea level rise via geoengineering rather than reducing use to prevent - and I know this because I asked them.

I have been diving into the literature recently and one thing I notice, that I think is interesting is how many of the publications are authored by scientists who are not at traditionally high powered climate institutes, or often indeed from countries we see a lot of climate modelling literature from. And their names are often not classically WEIRD either. Which suggests / methods in science are widening access. There is no need for a large hpc + a well developed model 1/2

TIL I learned that the first women to set foot in Antarctica was likely Danish- Norwegian Caroline Mikkelsen on a sub-Antarctic island and Norwegian Inger Christensenon the continent proper. There is so surprisingly little information on Caroline Mikkelsen available on the web, other than she was born in DK + married a Norwegian whaler with whom she sailed south. I cannot find much more than this also in Danish / Norwegian sources... https://da.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caroline_Mikkelsen
