I shared this privately before, but I just got the okay to share it in public. The Bluegrass Archive is online with a website and everything. This is a MASSIVE trove of legal live recordings from earliest days right up to now, which you can download and listen to for free. It is one of the greatest achievements of the fan-driven archiving community I've ever seen. I contributed a small number of filesets out of the thousands here.

Apple telling employees in San Diego that the only way they could keep their jobs was to move to Austin was tantamount to firing most of them, and disgusting beyond measure, especially for female employees for whom moving to Austin could potentially be a death sentence in a complicated pregnancy under horrific Texas laws.

@lauren strange more people can't see this for the obvious stealth layoff move it is. They want to keep their "no layoffs" streak alive but reduce the size and seniority of this workforce so this is what they came up with.

Since I see that a notable VC-famous is now telling us that he wish he'd "stood by" Eich way back, I'd like to tell you a true fact that situation: Eich didn't lose the CEO's job for his (reprehensible) Prop-8 donation.

Everyone wants to believe that's true, because fits nicely into narratives a number of invested camps want to believe, whether it's somebody being ousted for reprehensible views the woke SJW mob somehow pulling down a great leader (tm) but that's not what happened.

Lazyweb, a question: let's say that you could teach a "cultural anthropology" type of course about computing to first year students, to prepare them for the codebases, communities, patterns and software philosophies of the programming world. You've got about ten weeks to run it. What would you teach in that course and why?

(RTs appreciated for reach.)

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@mhoye first of all, a "how to work in teams" course or ten is apparently badly needed given my experience hiring recent CS grads, so this is a great question. I lack the breadth of experience to design such a course that would cover a wide enough range of possibility. But I would start with
non-programming associated disciplines, toxic vs healthy team dynamics, work/life balance, communication styles, code review cultures (taking/giving peer critique) plus "here's what the buzzwords mean"

Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.

With in the news, this seems like a good time to repost the stunning Rome 1980 Talking Heads live concert video. Without taking anything away from that magical film, believe it or not, it was filmed after the band's live performance apex which I think is fully captured in this incredible hour-plus of . I love SMS, but to me this is better, and it's not even very close. You may not agree but every fan should def check it out!

Okay let's listen to some great music by women bc there sure is a lot of it

We'll start with a few of my favorite current artists in different genres. First up is Noname and her second Tiny Desk concert. Her album Sundial was one of my couple favorites last year in any style.

So one good thing about & is that most folks here are level headed at least relative to other platforms. But that does mean we get very few really entertaining Scorching Hot Takes™️ bc no one wants to stand behind some insane thing they said as a lark.

So what if 2.29.2024 is a day? Post your most insane takes on any topic - without insulting anyone, don't be mean, this is still Fedi - delete them at the end of the day and we all act like it never happened

The first season of The Peripheral was ok in its way & I'm looking forward to the Neuromancer show of course but I'm really hoping above all that someone will eventually do a @GreatDismal adaptation that leans with full force into what I take as his two core theses: the very rich are "no longer even remotely human", and the causes & drivers of most stories are utterly opaque to the people living in them. This latter point confuses many readers and would cause delightful havoc in video media

Nina Simone - Love Me Or Leave Me (live on the Ed Sullivan Show, 1960)

Last music post for the afternoon due to internet outage. Did you know Nina was a genius on piano? I used to post this on the birdsite once a year, so if you followed me there you probably do know it, but if not, check this shit out! The switch from the swinging jazz feel of the song into the Bach style classical instrumental break is amazing & the move back is even better👑

I really wish folks who opined about international politics would stop taking state and non-state actors at their world, as opposed to just looking at things from a "What do they have to gain" perspective.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi I know american politics is full of disingenuous fuckery but to think the same isn't true generally is...strangely naive for people who probably think of themselves as appropriately cynical in the political sphere. Power politics seem pretty similar everywhere, we just see ours close up & are familiar with the nuances

...is it a weird form of almost infantilizing bias? these other people are simpler and so more honest? I just had that thought, not sure it's valid

Tonight I decided I needed to read something comforting. So I'm rereading The Last Unicorn. OMG it's good.

mrcompletely, (edited )
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@joyce there's a stealth category of Supposed Kids' Books That You Should Absolutely Read As An Adult and that's my number two all time book on that list, the first being The Thirteen Clocks by Thurber - I know @neilhimself is a fan as well - an absolutely masterful book on every level. Everyone should get to know the Golux and the Todal. Anyone who loves The Last Unicorn is likely to love this book too

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@KShortill @joyce I would certainly list the younger-audience works by @neilhimself to start with. He writes with respect for the minds of younger people, which is the key quality of a work like this. Calvin & Hobbes is a canonical text of this type, as are the first few Earthsea books by LeGuin. The Princess Bride novel is not, which surprises many who see the movie first. I've never written out an actual list so I'll have to think about it to recover a few more examples.
