I'm looking at a free BrowserStack plan for open source projects.

https://www.browserstack.com/open-source

They're not really clear about their requirements, although I'd assume they mean big projects with thousands of stars on GitHub. Right?

Anyone in the community has relevant knowledge/experience?

@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

Well, I was able to submit https://github.com/stefanbohacek/SimpleSharingButtons and that worked!

That is actually pretty cool.

Hey everyone! I recently posted about my latest project, a universal fediverse sharing button: https://stefanbohacek.com/project/fediverse-sharing-button/

Is this something that you'd find useful for your website or blog?

EDIT: Thanks everyone for sharing and trying this out! I fixed an issue on iOS some of you might have run into, just FYI.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@Adam Thank you, and thank you for the feedback, really appreciate it!

Adding an overlay with instructions, which would then open the sharing modal might be a bit too many steps? I do like the simplicity of the current approach.

I wonder if I could maybe change the text to something like "type your server name to share with the fediverse"?

That's a bit long, so not ideal either.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@Adam Also, a technical side note, the reason the text is not a real label is that I'm avoiding using an ID for any of the form elements, in case someone wants to use this on a blog that uses an infinite scroll, in which case you'd end up with non-unique IDs on the same page.

Wrapping the input in a label doesn't work too well either with this layout.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@sol_hsa Ahh, good point, didn't think of that.

And you're right, ideally this would get a better support on a browser level, as with setting your default email client, or calendar app.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@Adam Ah, yes, that was already fixed in the code snippet and on the demo page, but on my personal site I had the old code, thank you for catching that!

And I fixed the colors when dark mode is applied, that's what was causing the colors not work right. Thank you so much!

@Adam Oh, what about "Share from your fediverse domain"?

stefan,

@Adam Thank you, really appreciate all your help and feedback!

I'm prototyping a fediverse sharing button. Anyone interested in giving it a try?

Feature highlights:

  • shows a logo of supported fediverse software
  • lets you share selected text
  • remembers the last fediverse domain used

@billturner Ha, no need to apologize, I really appreciate you reporting this!

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@billturner Hmm, this being a Mastodon instance, it should support sharing via URL. Are you still seeing this note?

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@billturner Ah, got it, thank you for clarification!

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@ErikUden Hah, thank you, very kind of you! I don't know if better, but I think it's good for people to have a variety of options to pick from :-)

What is a fediverse-neutral word for "subtweet"? People here use "subtoot", but that's based on Mastodon's "toot", which is no longer officially used.

"Subpost" doesn't sound quite right. But I guess that's it?

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@wordsmith Fair enough!

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@jonobie Well that's a bit different.

"a usually mocking or critical tweet that alludes to another Twitter user without including a link to the user's account and often without directly mentioning the user's name"

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/subtweet

A reply would be directed at the person.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@puppygirlhornypost @AmyIsCoolz Yes, I think "subpost" is starting to grow on me.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@mia Good to know, thank you!

"Subpost" is actually starting to grow on me.

I often brag on tumblr about how "on the fediverse I never have to ask people for image descriptions, why is tumblr so terrible at this?" etc.

But, I've made the mistake of re-sharing a few images without descriptions recently! I was lulled into thinking it was not a problem.

Just FYI I'm going to get strict again about not re-sharing undescribed images. (You should too, it keeps the feed readable.)

If you forget? If this is new? Don't feel bad, just stop doing that.

I've been really enjoying working with Wikidata lately, setting up automated accounts like @libraries, @parks, and @lighthouses.

To see what else you can do with Wikidata, and to learn how to use it, check out a tutorial I put together: https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/making-a-map-of-unesco-world-heritage-sites/

  • 25 laps of Volcano Circuit (3.3 miles/5.3 km per lap)
  • 100 km (62 miles)
  • 100 miles (160.9 km)

...all in one session. Whew!

80 miles in, the iPad started to lag a bit, so I got a bit worried. I assume I'd lose all the progress if it crashed?

That would've sucked.
