You'd feel the same about the integrity of our legal system no matter how this case turned out, right?

benroyce, to random

that was quick

so i tend to think a quick verdict means guilty (i could be wrong)

jury delivers it soon, in minutes...

edit: they asked for an extra 30 minutes to fill out verdict forms...

points out that a lot of our angry politics is directed at a "meritocracy" that thru wealth/connections, thinks itself better than the rest of us and keeps successfully trying to get further ahead. Absolutely. But then for his media recs, he rattles off elite after elite who entertain heterodox views. Yea, no. Critical thinking isn't reserved for elites. It has to be non elites who truly challenge the power of the Ivy League, big banks and mainstream media.

Since I lost my job, we had to go back on my wife's company's insurance plan. Almost $1,900 a month. We can't do this.

Sorry Americans, but the United States is the worst country on this planet. Our government doesn't care about any of this country's residents.

our lack of universal health care is ridiculous and the easiest thing to fix. is very popular with everyone except some of those getting wealthy from the industry. either candidate could ensure their win today by promising even to just start eligibility at 50yo.

Are there alternative implementations of beyond ? if so, can they talk to each other without being involved at all? Is it all just not as decentralized as they want us to think it is? thanks.

The needs more . This is the that so many of us fell in love with. Trump brought forth so much anger and fear in our culture. You can and should be concerned about what's unfair in society, but do it without being an asshole or blaming grand conspiracies.

if you can't be in a coalition with people you disagree with on at least a few things, you can't build a coalition big enough to accomplish anything in the United States or defeat rising fascism.

It’s just not going to work.

I find the people who most want lefties to work with moderates get the most angry about them acknowledging some on the right have good points too.

It had to be something, right?

When I heard was gonna federate, I got hopeful. all the journalists and politicians might leave for a place that can also provide them a huge audience but with less assholes. and we will slowly get them to go independent as they recognize that controlling their work doesn't require losing their followers etc. enough people do that and it gets "locked open". we win.

so of course now has to tell them politics won't get the algo boost there...

runs a cult but remember that most people don't believe the craziest claims of their religion or do everything they are supposed to. They say what's necessary and show up on occasion for the community. He still says the election was stolen and they claim to believe him, but they do nothing. His supporters are keeping up appearances for each other. Very few stormed the capitol and nobody followed behind . He entertains them but the vast majority won't risk anything for his BS.

"There will always be a rebel alliance."

I love that @caseynewton said that the is the answer, but the WHY wasn't explained well imo. It basically never is. People focus on this place as a way to talk to each other instead of a way to surface the best stuff. The former doesn't threaten Google, the latter does. means no ads, algo or AI written by a third party. We collectively make the best info, ideas and art go viral. That's the magic.

How many people read but never post on social media? I think it's pretty high. You need an account to track who you are following for that, but that's it. Isn't this kinda like the podcast experience, where people have an app and an account there but nothing is public? Or consider how most people use YouTube.

Perhaps the could learn from this. First get people on an app. Setting up their app account gives them an ID on the developer's default server. Move on from there.

"The Verge and 404 Media are building out new functions that would allow them to distribute posts on their sites and on federated platforms – like Threads, Mastodon and Bluesky – at the same time. Replies to those posts on those platforms become comments on their sites."

If you're not looking at @theverge and @404mediaco as social web platforms that are hosting hand-picked content creators with a publisher's infrastructure, you're not paying attention.

@quillmatiq @theverge @404mediaco

awesome. we have to stop thinking about the fedi as a bunch of decentralized alternatives to the closed platforms, but AP as a social layer on top of the open web. that's where we become a threat to the vulture capitalists. the next step is to integrate the comment handling of lemmy/kbin/reddit. mastodon should do this too.

Economic news serves investors, but everybody getting what they want from people who feel paid well should be the ideal. It wouldn't necessarily produce any profit. Healthy competition, savings and satisfaction but not investment in the way we think of it.

It might be where we are heading with the media business, and maybe much more. An info ecosystem that makes the middlemen superfluous. Not only no central planning, but fewer top level planners as occupations overall.
