There is just no question in my mind that the culture of the fediverse (by any name) is a better model for civil discussion. But oddly, even many of its biggest champions have largely returned to Twitter, or pivoted to Threads, which may be a step up from Nazis, but that’s a pretty fucking law bar.

Just listened to @pjvogt and @crumbler on how we survive the media apocalypse. The answer? "We have to finish building the fediverse." Hell yeah.

we have to find a way to get creators paid directly and automatically based on percentage of consumption. people would give a lot more if we made it easy, automatic and direct. a @w3c protocol for bank to bank transfers. an API to track and distribute based on what you read, listen to and watch. no middlemen.

90s: free speech via open web
now: democratic attention
next: autopay for what's consumed

Who is gonna prove their purity more this November in battleground states, lefties refusing to vote for Biden or ancaps refusing to vote for Trump? In solid red or blue states, I'm all for voting your conscience.

Helpful tip to all of those woke activists who want to lie down in freeways and make cars swerve around you because you think it will somehow help your cause du jour:

Far more goods are moved by train than by truck. To serve your cause better, go lie down on some railroad tracks instead.

I'm sure the trains will swerve. 😜

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@ryan

be careful what you wish for. if train operators were notified ahead of time, they would. there's also a ton of easy to access and fuck with train tracks. this is actually a great strategy.

@ryan

if the American revolution was justified, I assume you'd agree this could be too. different goals and make it more properly targeted, even if more violent?

I have become much less supportive of protest to the degree I think messages can be heard via the internet, but it's also a question of how well this "republic" represents the interests of the people. a minority opinion can get their concerns attention in this way, but they shouldn't be able to force the laws to change etc imo.

I'm glad exists but a better format is actually what does on occasion. Two experts who disagree but also know how to talk to regular people, discussing an issue for a few hours, with a smart fair and funny moderator. Maybe fact checkers too. Entertaining and educational. Targeted towards audio-only consumption so folks have time to listen while doing other things like driving, chores or exercising. That's what's needed to get the most people better informed.

@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

People are biased. We always think we know shit that we don't. Given the chance, we will bias you too. For what we perceive as your own good. But the better good is always found by putting all of our eyes and brains on it. Systems that do that are never our first choice because they might lead to conclusions we disagree with, but luckily, most of us will choose them as our next best option. That's democracy. That's science. That's a mixed economy. That's the .

“The thing that really upset Dorsey: Bluesky users demanded moderation and Bluesky put it into place. Yeah, that was the whole issue.”

Good reflection on “decentralized” social media and what Dorsey really wants from it by @davidgerard:

When thinking about Elon and X, please also consider this. If a place for speech gets accepted as the most open and popular, then what's popular there will be claimed as speaking for the general public. Winning in the public square matters.

But of course X is not a public square. It's a place where lefties increasingly feel unwelcome cause of harassment. But its use by big names keeps telling the world that it matters. We must displace it, by limiting harassment but not speech here.

@Bunnyslope

intentionally bothering others. threats and slurs. hashtag spam. there's a gray area with how one responds to someone with a differing opinion or challenging facts. do that kindly and back off if someone gets annoyed.

but overall imo, everyone should be trying to better understand each other here. we're mostly speaking publicly here. private group capability here someday will hopefully let people differentiate and get the community feels they sometimes assume already exist here.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@Bunnyslope

speech that cannot be limited by the government, might still not be allowed in my house. or if being expressed in a public space, might still lead people having a nice conversation about the issues of the day, to get up and leave.

say whatever horrible shit you want but it will probably mean nobody will stick around to hear your genius explanation about how to handle poverty. swear and the people with their kids at the public meeting might leave. this isn't that hard edgelords.

The fix for is to embrace poor white men's interests along with those of women, racial minorities, gay and trans folk. MAGA paints itself as about them but it isn't. It's for the middle and upper class white men who think all these gains are coming at their expense, and they get PR cover by appearing to stand for their lower class brothers. Raise them up with all the other long forgotten people and the energy behind MAGA dies.

For a little while, was my favorite podcast. They'd talk more about the news than joking about their personal lives in elite circles, cared about more than just bashing the left and regularly had on people they disagreed with (even regarding stuff they are passionate about like Israel and Ukraine). Now they are like libertarian neo cons. It's not supposed to be possible yet here we are. Still worth listening to but I'm sorry to the people I recommended the show to.

my guess is one of the guys (Moynihan) just doesn't want to sound like an idiot/asshole trying to respond to criticism of his support for Netanyahu and hatred of Putin. there used to be more of a mix of the three but now the other two barely say anything.

Raw milk consumption is a litmus test for ability to conduct research and the propensity for self-determination. Women who drink raw milk are more likely to breastfeed for the same reasons. Bird flu concentrates in the mammory glands of infected mice (and cows apparently).

This is looking more and more like a targeted attack on "troublemakers".

You will drink the boiled swill milk. You will feed your baby the corn syrup. YOU WILL SUBMIT.

I don't believe in justice. I don't know what that would mean. Seems inherently ideological to me.

What I'm trying to achieve is the best situation for everybody. @amerika claims to want the same thing but thinks he knows best how to achieve that. He has the answers, knows who has to suffer in the short term etc. I do not but I do think the tools I mentioned above are how we constantly work out how to achieve my goal together.

What system would be better capable of justice iyo?

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@amerika @Dhowjen

fairness and values differ in families, yet you keep preaching they only differ by "culture" so you can draw your lines and ship off the brown people, kill commies and suppress the gays. fuck the brown commie dykes further along the bell curve than you, apparently. there's no way they'd have better ideas on how to run a society. you don't care about winning arguments. you just want to convince more folks who think they'd be better off in your monarchy, to do the nasty work.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@Dhowjen

But it's always perceived thru the expectations of that society, and that's where the ideology resides. What is normal and good. When you let everyone have a voice, that changes to try to also encompass their views. It's really hard. It's why @amerika advocates what he does. I get his point but most people's empathy doesn't allow this. That's the liberal part of liberal democracy. You hear their perspectives and it actually changes what we consider acceptable. All the rights movements.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@Dhowjen

I think we have a really good system and you can't think of a better one. but you don't see how it will give you the world you'd see as just. it's actually going to get worse as the historically disadvantaged get more of the pie.

so you claim there must be a conspiracy at play. somehow this Constitutional thing got rigged. the game is now unfair.

I see a system that could be better but nothing fundamental needs changing, unlike the woke who want no system. just victim olympics.
