A fire installation at unSCruz, the Burning Man regional event for Santa Cruz. It’s a shallow metal bowl plumbed for propane and suspended upside down 8 feet in the air. The flame is starved for oxygen and blooms and spreads when fresh air drifts into the bowl.

I laid beneath it on a cold evening this weekend, and it was marvelous.

This video is normal speed and completely unretouched, including hippie chatter in the background.

I have a director’s chair I bought ~30 years ago, when I needed chairs and they were cheap at Pier One. The wood was looking dry so put mineral oil on it … and realized it still had playa dust on it from EIGHT years ago. The canvas is fine (tiny mold spot in one spot from all the rain), the wood frame is fine, and it folds up to slightly larger than today’s camp chairs — which rarely last that long with the same amount of abuse. I’m basically Team Wood and Canvas forever.

Dr_Bombay,
@Dr_Bombay@mstdn.social avatar

@jonobie I miss Pier One! they had some quality stuff. We have a set of those director's chairs in storage, too, and they are still solid as the day we bought them.

@Dr_Bombay Yeah, I miss them too-interesting and affordable home goods. And way more variety of colors, textures, and wood tones than IKEA!

A "new" addition to Deep Ellum in Dallas, Texas.

It is called the Tree of Ténéré. It is the second version of a tree that was made for in 2017.

An information card close to it lists the following details about its construction:

120 Branches
840 Twigs
12,600 Leaves
75,600 LEDs
22,046 lbs

An artificial tree made out of steel and aluminum. It has a very thick canopy made of leaves made up of LED lights. In this picture, the lights are currently white and various shades of purple. Behind the tree is a parking garage and a high rise building. The night sky is seen in the background.

Once again shaking my head at a regional franchise event using a social media platform that has enabled genocide as the only place they announce information.

Why do Xoomers hate email?

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@otakup0pe We (as technologists) have failed miserably that this is basically the only realistic way muggles can organise on the internet. It’s terrible, but I really can’t fault the muggles for this one.

(It could be worse: in Berlin we have a Telegram group, numerous Facebook pages, a couple of different seldom-updated web sites and a Discord. It’s a mess.)

Rural_Canadian,

The ENTIRE "selling point" of this festival for years was it's integrity, specifically ecological integrity with the idea that people would "leave-no-trace" when they left.
(I do this when I camp in the back-country of northern algonquin park, ontario, canada.)
The hypocrisy of this festival is so overt that it is OBVIOUS that it is time to PUT IT DOWN.

Playa Restoration seems to be going well

"It turns out a rough playa like the one we have this year is easier to remediate than last year’s dunes. Chaos explained, “The ruts and holes caused by vehicles is a real issue but one that can be mitigated fairly easily by dragging and watering. This process breaks down bumps and high spots, and then fills in the depressions. We have a lot of experience with this and are conducting these operations currently.”

Minkowski (my art installation at the burn this year) was an interactive piece with memory, so it recorded small amounts of data from each interaction. This enabled it to "remember" previous interactions and respond accordingly if you entered a code it gave you.

I've extracted that data and am starting to parse it. High level summary:

  • 600 unique interactions
  • 248 "new" interactions
  • 204 "remembered" interactions (!!)
  • 148 entries of fake codes (yeah I saw that)

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@cliffle Had you taken any measures to protect it from rain? If so, can you see how they failed and what would you do better next time?

cliffle,
@cliffle@hachyderm.io avatar

@ratkins I mean, sort of? I think my summary would be

  • Water is going to get in there
  • Yes, even in there
  • Mud is conductive
  • Consider not being in blowing mud conditions

I didn't conformally coat and silicone-seal everything because I needed to be able to do maintenance in the field with limited tools, but that likely would have helped.

Max Burns on the Burning Man festival and its (spurious) claims to be about imagining a new utopian society:

"Revelers come to Burning Man to bathe in the hypertight light of an inhibitionless celebration; but not every attendee is created equal. A census of the festival conducted in 2017 found that over three-quarters of attendees were white, while only 1 percent were Black."

Some people have the luxury of pretending. Other's do not.

@ratkins @Dr_Bombay oh there are issues to be dealt with for sure! But the hot takes and obvious schadenfreude are currently overwhelming. There is a big conversation to have about many parts of TTITD and how to make it even better but right now everyone is in "see, told ya" mode.

Is just rich & wealthy people LARPing struggle?

- https://mastodon.social/@caseynewton/111030308802368771

volkris,

@Decad3nce, to answer your question simply: nope.

It’s sad that there are so many articles that focus only on the rich folks who show up at without covering the huge numbers of participants who don’t fit that description, who work and save and struggle just to get there and join their community, to do something beautiful… and who themselves have a dim view of wealthy folks who just jump in without giving back.

The burners that I know are evenly split between career professionals and wage earners, and one of the most amazing thing about the community is how it brings them all together, to help each other out.

But so many articles would have readers believe burning is just about rich people hanging out on the playa.

It’s far from an accurate picture of the community and event.

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@volkris @Decad3nce Bingo. Conflating the Burn being (obviously) affected by climate change with the Burn being a meaningful cause of climate change is spectacularly dumb. And universalising the experience of rich wankers is ignorant. Nobody laughed harder at the idea of Diplo and Chris Rock trudging down gate road than the other 70,000 of us there.
