Other issues aside, a big problem that's stopping me from using Discord and other services is the requirement to link your phone number (either immediately, or after "suspicious activity" or other methods) and the "convenience features" that entails: Notifications to your contacts that you're on the same platform, appearing in their list automatically, etc.

There's no certain way to stop this, because blocking access to your contact list does nothing if a platform uses people who have you in their contact list as basis instead. There's always this uncertainty that even if there isn't such a feature or it doesn't work this way right now, what about the next update? Surprise, now my family, boss etc. know I'm a wyvern online.

It's easy to keep your identities separate with email, but phone numbers are a royal pain in the ass and I sure as hell won't buy a second SIM just to have proper isolation.

    I feel like my brain doesnt retain details in my memory for anything within these last 5 years. I can remember things in that "yes, that happened" but thats it. And yes, that includes good memories.

    "Block minors on sight" is a popular rule for furries. So is "minors should identify themselves as minors."

    As an adult, I used to block minors. It didn't feel amazing to quarantine myself like I'm nuclear waste. As for the other rule, I wasn't in the furry fandom as a minor and had no desire to be on Twitter, but I was raised under the idea that it was bad to broadcast my age to strangers.

    These rules serve some kind of function.

    From what I can tell, a lot of people believe in this third hidden rule which they see as obvious and rarely articulate: "if an adult does a sex thing and a minor sees it, then you should punish the adult for grooming."

    Maybe it seems obvious because it is obvious, but it's got problems. On broadcast-based platforms, how do you enforce it? It only makes sense to actually punish someone for being seen if they reasonably could have prevented it. And that would only be possible if people are following the other two rules.

    Unfortunately, everyone isn't following the other two rules. Not all minors cop to being minors and people in your network may boost your lewd posts to minors who follow them.

    So the groomer identification and punishment clause is overbroad. It might have value if you selectively enforce it, but that defeats the point of it being a rule. Seemingly the only way to avoid being seen is not to do sex things in public at all.

    Note that the construction of "sex thing" is narrow for straight people -- kissing doesn't count as a sex thing -- and wide for queer people and kinksters -- hypno counts, transformation counts, and vague allusions to those things count. "Being queer in public" counts as a sex thing.

    And the rules have side effects. Rule one means that queer kids don't get adult queer role models. Rule two means that predators can selectively target minors without typing "ASL."

    The world where these rules are consistently followed is not meaningfully different from a world where Florida's "Don't Say Gay" laws are universally adopted.

    Which frustrates me further because I have seen actual queer furries saying: "It's not that I think you're grooming kids. It's that the law does" as if that's a complete argument for why queer people shouldn't be around kids.

    They're not saying "don't do this, it's unethical." They're saying "don't do this, it's illegal."

    Whether it actually is illegal depends on what country you live in. In the US, it depends on how your local DA interprets incredibly vague state-specific laws about things like corrupting minors. (The elements of public indecency and soliciting a minor are way more specific and you're not likely to meet them by accident.)

    You're also, as always, at risk of being extralegally harassed by law enforcement. The police can arrest you for any reason or no reason, and they can charge you with crimes they have no evidence you committed.

    So the question of whether it's illegal doesn't tell the whole story -- you can go to jail for things that aren't illegal. But even if it is illegal, which it probably is in some states, that's not always a good reason not to do it.

    In this case, the situation turns "being queer in public" into a form of civil disobedience -- but that's a form of civil disobedience you should probably support.

    Especially in places where American minors in the Southeast might see it -- those Don't Say Gay laws I mentioned are actually real there, and unlike the queer people who are silently disappearing from their lives, the furries they meet on the internet aren't bound by them.

    To preempt one bad take on my post: I'm not advocating for sexual contact between adults and minors. I am, however, advocating for an extremely narrow construction of "sexual contact" in which being queer in public doesn't count and most ways of being broadcastedly Horny on Main also don't count.

    I think you should be allowed to have an FA gallery and you should be allowed to talk about your partner's massive schlong and how they railed you with it, and if a teenager sees that, it's significantly more tame than the literal content of teen-targeted media like Grand Theft Auto V.

    @pyrex This is very relatable to me and how I think about things. I was in furry at age 17 and was actively online. That was back in 1999 so it's hard to compare that to how things are with social networks now. However, even at my age, I had an idea of the implications about the age of consent laws. So, I abstained from any discourse about sex or topics bordering on that bc I understood how adults could get in trouble for what teens might see as "no big deal"

    I want my social profiles to be approachable but .... I have to be careful bc minors don't understand (and sometimes) don't care.

    @jonobie @weaving Ohhyeah! Def can say its one of those box looms from the 90s.

    Alot of my craft and tech explorations rely on people to throw things out.

    In the current day I have this thing they call an "income" and so I can save up for something that will actually do the job. I know you dont do beading on the loom but can you recommend some looms to look at? I worry about the tension thing you have mentioned in your first reply.

    Life is chaotic and I’m genuinely overwhelmed. I have almost stopped posting in most places, but Bluesky is where I vent and follow news and shit.

    Of late, I finally got extended medical again and I am fixing teeth, seeing physios, etc.

    It’s great but EXHAUSTING.

    I’ve also gotten in with a non-profit who are going to try to help me radically change my life.

    Posting… is very low priority right now, that’s all. It feels like work.

    I wish I could have seen Second Life when it was less empty. There's vast areas of empty, abandoned land most places I go, and I've even seen land for sale that advertises having really good scenery that's long gone.

    It's the only 3d hangout that really appealed to me so it sucks to just have a ghost town version of it.
