ratkins, All the abysmal #BurningMan takes are giving me a massive dose of Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect.
cliffle, Some photos of Minkowski, my art installation this year, during setup and operation -- before it was destroyed by the storm.
I've got some interaction videos as well, which I need to edit down.
It worked fairly well until destroyed -- I saw a bunch of people interact with it, some returning later to try again. I logged all interactions and am looking forward to analyzing the data!
A nighttime photo of my debugging setup for the art installation. On the left is the installation itself, a 12-foot white pillar with a solar panel. On the right, my Jeep is parked serving as an equipment rack. There's a folding camp chair in the foreground, where I sat when coding.
A shot of the art installation when inactive, with the Man (as in Burning Man) in the background. The installation sports a large button and a large surface that appears as a mirror when inactive.
A shot of the installation active at night. The mirror activates to show the progress of a light pulse at solar system scale. James is leaning casually on the button that activates the machine.

Self Reliance
12 min video
Ever notice the US has a self reliance myth it needs to slap on everything?
Oh yah, it happened at burnin man.
Piousunyn, Not sure what self reliance means, suspect it is like capitalists saying people need to pull themselves up by their Throng Straps.
opethminded,
Dr_Bombay, click!
bzzzzzzz
hummmHey, i'm back! man, what a year. so great. already planning for next year.
What's that? the rain and mud?
Oh yeah, that was definitely a thing, wasn't it? so many noobs who don't know to just sit & chill and wait for the desert to dry out, sheesh. Well, i guess the media and the haters had fun with it all and got to feel smug for a couple days. Oh well. I have yet to see any story that actually captures how it really felt to the average burner. #BurningMan
otakup0pe, @Dr_Bombay I know/ met plenty of first timers who did it mor right than decade plus veterans.... Great year tho. Resto gonna be wild...
ratkins, @baba_lilith @otakup0pe @Dr_Bombay The thing I’m really concerned about is how quickly changing weather patterns might make the event completely unviable. “It’ll be hot and dusty and windy at times” is one thing, but it being on the cards you’ll get torrential rain, 80km/h winds and 50°C for days at a time over the ~2 months between setup and resto is something else altogether.
mikeblake,
Dr_Bombay, This is a fair article. #BurningMan

timrichards, Good read.
"Burning Man... is now a magnet for the kinds of people who make a lot of money by devoting their lives to upholding the unjust status quo, and who go to Burning Man in part to shore up their smug sense of being creative innovators as they endeavor to make things worse for the rest of us."

bgrinter, @timrichards can you imagine the surge pricing
kasilas, @timrichards it has been going that way for decades. Due to the increasing hype and mainstream influence that they enjoyed, there never was any real push back on selling out.

exador23, @ai6yr "Two of my campmates were quite sick" hmm. I wonder what that could have possibly been?
_ohcoco_, @starburst42 @ai6yr Well, I had no idea what a luggable loo was (other than guessing), but now I do! This is a pretty good article with useful info for people like me >>>
ai6yr, #BurningMan, seen on 9/4/2023 1840UTC via #Landsat
ai6yr, @exador23 @wryanfisher Zoom out... This is pre-structure... it looks like some parts of the site already have more natural water accumulation, probably because those areas have the most rutting from prior years. I'm curious why there are "red" (dry) areas, but one is obviously where the "Burning Man" sits, which appears is surrounded by lower (trampled?) area, allowing for more water runoff. Either that, or ash remnants on the surface pushing off water.
exador23, @ai6yr @wryanfisher red areas are probably small dunes that dry out quicker. it's one of the myriad reasons I stopped going. the smallest bit of trash starts accumulating dust when the wind blows. playa restoration tries to knock them down, but you've still got more material there. The annual flooding can only flatten it back out so much.
The lower right corner of the image always gets the most dust during the event. prevailing winds tend to blow dust kicked up from roads that direction.

me_valentijn, @ai6yr
I'm gonna predict a substantial increase in ATVs, monster trucks, and tanks for BM 2024.
ai6yr, @me_valentijn Probably. My 4Runner would have done fine there (offroad tires, 4wd)... maybe would have had to let a lot of air out the tires, however.

ai6yr, Ha, you can track how long it is taking to get out of #BurningMan by watching the ham radio folks using #APRS. KK6FEN's 3 hour path. Not moving very fast. Left camp around 6 hours ago. Still in line.
Another radio amateur, 6 hour path. Not getting very far, either.

But danged if this doesn't make me want to defend the lot of them to the death. 😂

ai6yr, Wow, they've turned the clearly defined exit roads into 25 lane freeways there at #BurningMan trying to not drive in the #mud. Looks like a mud gauntlet here caused everyone to widen out the road https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6INIzHP3Q-o
ai6yr, Mud gauntlet... probably 25-50 lanes of new road on the playa in this spot. Serious offroad damage.
ai6yr, Tenets of Burning Man in action here:
Civic Responsibility - Ignore your fellow campers hopelessly stuck in the muck, as you burn rubber past the carcass of their disabled vehicle
Leaving No Trace - Make sure to put thousands and thousands of new ruts in the floor of the desert, while leaving while the playa is still a muddy mess.
Gifting - Leaving all your crap with people at your campsite, because you are going to bug out early despite what the organizers have asked.
