Am I the only one experiencing this?

I just tried a few AI plugins for and they were all bad. This domain might be a great test for . I predict these failings are unlikely to be fixed any time soon:

  • Layout was poor
  • They can't create components
  • Laughably complex object hierarchies (everything was enclosed in a frame)

Of course things will improve, but I expect fixing these deep structural problems are a function of many new constraints, likely beyond what today's LLMs are actually capable of. @simon ?

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@scottjenson This problem reminds me of AI-generated printed circuit board layouts. A bunch of companies have been trying to get that one right for years now, but the 2D nature and the topological constraints of the interconnections make it really hard to do with AI.

simon,
@simon@simonwillison.net avatar

@scottjenson were these plugins producing visual component output? I'd be surprised to see that work well, current LLMs deal with text and have very weak "spatial reasoning" - if you could call it that

Most promising demo around that kind of thing I've seen so far is this one: https://github.com/tldraw/make-real

I'm happy to say that ever since I started using Flatpak's desktop package, its become one of my favorite programs and I use it every day day now. And it just got a slick new upgrade. So now I finally have a application in my daily repertoire.

Way better than , which has become total garbage ever since bought it.

grtcdr,
@grtcdr@emacs.ch avatar

@rml I don't know anything about Penpot's process, so long as the team behind it is not wrapping their binary in a Flatpak and calling it a day.

I do think that developers should at least acquaint themselves with the target audience's ecosystem and try, even as an exercise, to package the app by hand.

I think, at that point, they'll come to appreciate the non-agnosticism of Flatpak which already alleviates so much of the pain points of packaging something for Linux.

rml,
@rml@functional.cafe avatar

@grtcdr I already said its a web app, its not a binary meant to run natively, but can be deployed to.

as someone who has packaged tons of software, expecting independent software producers to package their software for every use is silly. a "target ecosystem" -- what is that?? If you're writing free software, your initial users in particular are going to be spread across distros and systems. Hence why distros and package managers are typically responsible for packaging. What we need is better funding for package managers and distros.

Penpot is designed for commercial deployment, they've put plenty of work into designing a webapp that can leverage several servers across the globe to facilitate low latency "multiplayer" design workflows across several studios simultaneously.

If I wrote a guix package for penpot, it would take me several days, assuming no surprises. I would rather just use their software tbh.

Q: Is there a tool to create a font from custom SF Symbols? Or, is there a way to use my custom SF Symbols in Figma?

#Figma #Design

y2mango,
@y2mango@mastodon.social avatar

@krzyzanowskim You can "Copy Symbol” in the SF Symbol app (it copies a unicode symbol), and paste it as text (in SF Pro font).

y2mango,
@y2mango@mastodon.social avatar

@krzyzanowskim no, but at least there is something. I want my custom symbols to work too. Maybe a simple app exporting all weight variants as separate images can be good enough for me.

Two big takeaways from this interview with the CEO of #Figma:

  1. Figma’s plan is now to go for IPO. Let the enshittification begin.

  2. Figma is trying to work out how to use customer data to train AI models.

And a bonus takeaway:

  1. The definition of startup must have changed because, despite being a company with ~$600 million ARR, he says “We’re a startup”.

@Brendanjones I've chatted with a couple companies lately that referred to themselves as "startups" despite multiple rounds of investment and considerable revenue. It seems like a convenient way to keep employees “hustling”.

Brendanjones,
@Brendanjones@fosstodon.org avatar

@mikehaynes yeah I've heard plenty of companies say they have a 'startup culture', which is ... fair enough, whatever, describe your culture how you like, we know it's shorthand for "we expect you to work for more hours than we pay you".

But actually calling a $10 billion company a startup is laughable.

Once again facing that classic conundrum: Theme and/or customize a 3rd party component library, or build one from scratch.

Actually, we need two component libs: A one for web products and a one for iOS & Android apps. We already have designs in and want to have parity in terms of design & naming across Figma, web & RN.

My gut and past experiences make me lean towards building from scratch.

What would you do and why?

cirrus,
@cirrus@mstdn.social avatar

@cliftonlabrum I wasn't aware of Expo. Looks interesting, but not sure it would work for us.

We have many existing websites/-apps built with a variety of frameworks. My aim is therefore to produce UI components that they can all consume at their own pace, to gradually migrate their UI code. Hence why web components was chosen.

I presume (maybe incorrectly?) that a library of Expo components would not be consumable in non-Expo apps. Right?

cirrus,
@cirrus@mstdn.social avatar

@texcut Interesting. Maybe I should give MUI another look. I've worked with an old version (v4) of their React lib in the past, but I guess a lot has changed since then.

Good shout on using their Figma lib too, though. I do believe if you're going to use a 3rd party lib, you should go all in. Trying to bend them to designs that were made independently can be the source of much pain IMHO

TIL that scroll position/state management has changed in prototypes. I wondered why the screen wasn’t staying where I scrolled when I didn't have "Reset scroll position" checked.

Now, screens that have a similar name + / will keep the same scroll position.

Example:
"Home/Default” and Home/Expanded” will share scroll position.

“Default” and “Expanded" will not.

jenni,
@jenni@mastodon.social avatar

@danilo I was a bit scared to do the switch at first. I felt really overwhelmed. As I started learning it, I started to love it more. I had to go back to Sketch for a few files and I really prefer Figma now.

Some of the small details like naming artboards, changing colors, are easier.

The prototyping alone has become super powerful, but since you’re a dev, you could probably just build it faster 😅

I don’t mind talking about this more with you, I’ve sort of become a Figma fangirl😜

jenni, (edited )
@jenni@mastodon.social avatar

@danilo as far as muscle memory, it’s pretty similar. There’s a few quirks you have to get use to. One big one for me was to remember to hold command when resizing the artboard, otherwise it stretches things really weird because of auto layout.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@jtretakoff I’m just empathetic to people who had this as part of their compensation and pointing out that there are plenty of people who aren’t happy about this. The 5% breakup fee is fair. But let’s not pretend Figma as a company isn’t now in a much, much worse position than it was 15 months ago. It is fine to not like Adobe but pretending this was a good result for anyone (except perhaps them, b/c they didn’t potentially overpay at the top of market), including customers is weird.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@jtretakoff this will lead to material changes at Figma now that it has to IPO if it wants to give investors counting on returning capital to LPs their return. Anyone who thinks those changes won’t be in the negative for customers is naive. I wish the best for Figma as it is a great product but they got screwed here. Especially with it taking this long to resolve.
