Annual arduous work capacity test ("pack test") complete for wildland fire. I'm fully qualified for another year

ai6yr,

@bud_t Hooray! Now, the question is, how many days can you survive on only Uncrustables?

bud_t,
@bud_t@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@ai6yr if I also have coffee and the occasional MRE, then 14 days 😁

I wonder if they are going to set fires and burn the lovely green hill the goats recently grazed on that I pass all the time.

ai6yr,
  • trivia: photo there is a wildfire from 2007. Probably Orange County, I'll have to go geolocate it. Popular stock image. I suspect the Witch Fire in San Diego, or the Santiago Fire in Orange County.

California’s wildfire tech R&D group has big plans. Deputy Chief Marcus Hernandez said his office's upcoming report will tell the governor which innovative new firefighting technologies show the most promise. (via @barkflight) https://statescoop.com/california-wildfire-technology-research-development/

jimhubbell,

@ai6yr @barkflight
It seems like the APRS system could be adapted for their use. Putting some sort of mesh router system on the engines could handle the remote connectivity problem.

ai6yr,

@jimhubbell @barkflight All of these systems are essentially based on the same principles...

ai6yr,

@MsMerope I think less so this year, not as many burn scars. But we shall see.

Grandalf,

Saddened to hear of the tragic loss of a firefighting aircraft in Queensland.

Firefighters, whether on the ground or in the air, are a family and the loss of one, let alone three, is felt by us all.

My thoughts are with their families and friends.

@ai6yr when someone refuses to sign the check for expenditure they authorized previously they should be sent to debtors prison. Falling that we should take a several billion dollar lean on all their assets until they sign. Every damn day.

@chris

Yeah... I saw that news, very sad. My son is 30, and he is working as a firefighter. No wildfires yet in his area, thankfully, but only a matter of time, I'm afraid.

ianrosewrites,

Wildland firefighters have never been more important, and frankly, we are treating them like garbage. I don't blame them for quitting. If any job in the west should be well paid, and provided with every safety and health protection, it's this one.

This is going to lead to more imprisoned people fighting our fires, which is an even more terrible, indefensible solution.
