New paper just out: We simulated climate-driven 🔥 and their impacts on forests in , eastern , throughout ~20,000 years since the LGM ❄️ in the individual-based model LAVESI-FIRE 🌲

Results show stand-replacing fires decreasing larch dominance, and the occurrence of different post-fire regeneration pathways under similar fire regimes.

@NikaShilobod @paleofire @geoscience I see that great info was already provided! In case this is done with age-dated material and accumulation rates should later be calculated (and other common evaluations of the charcoal data), there are several nice scripts (e.g. "CharAnalysis" for Matlab by Higuera et al., https://www.publish.csiro.au/wf/wf09134). Inspired by that, we made an R script with similar functions - the linked paper also includes more info on charcoal prep in the lab: https://zenodo.org/records/4943274

To use or not tu use the term ""? 🔥

After Linley et al. (2022) suggested a standardized definition (> 10,000 ha extent) to reduce ambiguity, a new perspective by Stoof et al. (2023) recommends not using the term at all in science:
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/geb.13791

I'm a fan of clear definitions and standardization of , but at the same point, also wondering if we really need a special term for fires of a certain extent?

Wherever you stand on this war, the BBC’s reporting has been shockingly poor.

Why is ‘targets’ in scare quotes here? I haven’t seen them use that in any reporting of other armed groups in the conflict.

@rglueckler@fediscience.org avatar

@sheepchase I don't like a lot of the reporting going on, but still I am usually careful to assume bias. When I see things like this, however...what is going on at BBC?

@kevinrothrock Apart from the citing "The Sun"-part in this - would be interesting to see those researchers (?) applying the same method to video/audio material of someone else. Easy way to potentially falsify the method. I expect a lot of variation using material from different daytimes, video/audio sources, etc.

Edited to include question mark as I don't know if the people behind this were in fact researchers - did not find any reference in the article.

Russian Senator Andrey Klishas calls for a swift and harsh police response to the rioting in Dagestan. "Tragic events in the Middle East are no excuse for inciting ethnic hatred in Russia." Seems likely that there will be some felony arrests soon. https://t.me/andreyklishas/2656

@kevinrothrock When the Kremlin invites Hamas and copies it's language, it also invites it's hatred.

rglueckler,
@rglueckler@fediscience.org avatar

@kevinrothrock Might have phrased it in a misleading way, didn't want to suggest government intention behind these riots. Yet imo they are a logical outcome of a certain style of communication.

@rglueckler@fediscience.org avatar

Reproducing eliminatory language of hate against Israel will always incite eliminatory hate against Jews. In general, if we are (rightfully) appalled by all the violence, let's take a moment to reflect if our wording promotes peace or if it only serves to pour oil on the flames. A demonization of Israel achieves only the latter, and we keep witnessing the terrible outcomes. Do we care about the harm of our language or not? Just my two cents.

Meanwhile 's defence minister, Yoav Gallant, has said Israel will sever all ties with the Strip once its war with is over -- it would, as he put it, end its "responsibility" for life there.

The authorities say attacks have now killed more than 4100 people.

Over 1400 Israelis were killed in Hamas' unprecedented extremist attacks within Israel earlier this month

rglueckler,
@rglueckler@fediscience.org avatar

@fulelo I am constantly switching positions between "It's just too much and shouldn't be shared" and "People should see this". It's so unspeakably evil. Some (way too many) people out there having the audacity to justify any of this is another layer of horror to October 7. May the victims rest in peace.

MoBlack, to random
@MoBlack@mastodon.online avatar

My problem is this: if you say "Israel has a right to defend itself" or "Israel has a right to exist". You are not compelled to condemn, justify, or even acknowledge the horrible acts of violence necessary in the creation of or "defense" of the state of Israel.

But before I can say "Palestinians have a right to resist annihilation", I have to first condemn all Palestinians as terrorists and condemn everything you think Hamas has done in the past 24 hours before I can even speak.

rglueckler,
@rglueckler@fediscience.org avatar

@MoBlack Israeli people are not the Israeli government. Palestinian people are not Hamas. Let's call out horrendous crimes against humanity Hamas committed this weekend for what they are. It was the biggest massacre of Jewish people - babies, children, elderly, all targeted on full purpose - since the Holocaust, and it was committed in a way that is evil beyond words. Accepting this truth does not minimize the equally true suffering of Palestinians.

Many people are having a hard time right now. Don't be silent. Show them you are there, and that they can count on your support. If you feel the urge to somehow justify what happened - please, just don't. Give people room to grieve. The shock is tangible.

rglueckler,
@rglueckler@fediscience.org avatar
  1. Of course air has an impact on wildfires. Yes, hot days will not result in "spontaneous self-ignition" of a forest, but that was never the point. Bringing that up is a classic straw-man fallacy, and using it against climate change impacts is a logical mistake.

  2. is not an argument against the impact of climate change. Global warming impacts both natural and human-caused ignitions.

(2/3)

rglueckler,
@rglueckler@fediscience.org avatar
  1. Many regions across the globe are experiencing a towards increased wildfire activity. However, those who use the decline in globally summed up burned area over the last 20 years to say otherwise ignore important context and draw an invalid conclusion from the data.

It needs to be stressed that institutions commonly linked to systematic about climate change are starting to include wildfire in their repertoire – misleading arguments will likely continue to spread.
