Rivian's R2, R3 & R3X launch event in 5

Rivian has been promising to make a smaller, more affordable electric SUV that will sit alongside pricier R1T and R1S vehicles. The R2 won’t go into production until 2026, but when it does it will come w/ estimated range of 330 miles, a 0–60mph time of 3 seconds, & a starting price of $45K. We also saw the R3 the R2’s “sibling,” & the R3X, the R3’s performance trim which has a wider stance & smaller crossover shape.

Thank you @poloniousmonk for chiming in! @LeftistLawyer I love your avatar! 🎸 🐢 💀

Ugh. Yet another extremely slow Electify America charger. Was getting about 140 kW from a nominally 350 kW charger, which then dropped to about 40 kW before I was even to 70%. Ended up switching to a 150 kW charger after another charged faster than me from it, and am currently get an improved 66 kW from it…

joshourisman,
@joshourisman@hachyderm.io avatar

@bitprophet there was a bolt charging next to me. It was going to take over an hour to get to 80%… I still got there in 30 minutes.

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@joshourisman yes, obviously 😝 I would not in fact trade my nice middle of the road 150kW-capable PS2 for a Bolt.

But if one were to optimize for minimal charger-speed-related sadness by discounting average time to charge…🤣

joshourisman,
@joshourisman@hachyderm.io avatar

Holy shit. Never cutting it that close again. 😬

joshourisman,
@joshourisman@hachyderm.io avatar

@bitprophet the combination of high speed limits and strong winds had an unexpectedly large effect on our range, and what should have been a comfortable margin was very much not… got two more days of driving ahead of us, and definitely going to be a lot more conservative for them…

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@joshourisman now you know!

joshourisman,
@joshourisman@hachyderm.io avatar

Drove up to Chama for groceries. Most of the town has no power (so the Loop EV charger is out of commission), and while the grocery store now has power, they appear to have lost all their meat and frozen foods, and most of their produce.

So now I’m in Pagosa Springs, CO for groceries, because it ends up being basically the same driving time as going down to Española.

Even starting with only a 70% SoC, the has plenty of range, but there’s also some nice, fast chargers here.

I wasn't exactly trying to create a Rivian ad, but it did kind of turn out that way.

Finally getting the car washed after my road trip to Portland and back, and it looks SOOOO good! Also getting the dents in the tailgate and hood fixed today 😬

joshourisman,
@joshourisman@hachyderm.io avatar

Very pleased with the R1T’s performance in snow, even with the road tires! I suppose the weight and distribution probably help a lot with that.

joshourisman,
@joshourisman@hachyderm.io avatar

@greg very! The only complaints I’ve had so far are minor software issues, which obviously can be fixed pretty easily (and several things already have).

greg,
@greg@gregnewman.io avatar

@joshourisman nice. The only two EV’s I would even consider right now is yours and the upcoming Ram.

ibwatson,
@ibwatson@mstdn.party avatar

Welp, my 5am alarm came and went, and I stirred to “wait, why is the heater on? Oh shit! It’s 6:30!” 🙃 So I will definitely be staying the night in Sacramento instead of pushing on to Fresno. But the truck is packed and ready to go, including my e-bike.

I guess this means I can get caught up on my mastodon timeline? We’re at a complete standstill.

@joshourisman they grow up so fast 🥹

joshourisman,
@joshourisman@hachyderm.io avatar

Are there any good apps for finding EV charging stations that are near good places to eat? PlugShare lets you filter for ones near dining, but it’s not easy to actually find ones near GOOD dining…

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@joshourisman seems like a tall order / narrow market niche tbh. Maybe in another 5-10 years when there are actually a lot of charging station options 😭

joshourisman,
@joshourisman@hachyderm.io avatar

Of the four charging stations listed in Los Alamos, , one didn’t exist, one had four chargers, only three of which worked and were all taken, one ChargePoint one that told me I couldn’t use it right then with no further details, and one that is free, but only charging the at about 5 kW…

Very glad we did not run into any situations like this on our road trip!

greg,
@greg@gregnewman.io avatar

@joshourisman this is why I’m nowhere near getting an EV

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@joshourisman yup, it’s a shitshow half the time. Yay!

@jimfl oops! Sorry about that!

joshourisman,
@joshourisman@hachyderm.io avatar

Day 1 of roadtripping with the #Rivian. Drove from #Baltimore to #Indianapolis, ~600 miles. Followed the built-in navigation’s advice on charging, which I think was a little too conservative. It had us stop 4 times, despite a nominal range of a hair over 400 miles with a full charge. I think it needs a roadtrip mode, or something, that lets you temporarily sacrifice ideal battery conditioning for overall speed, but otherwise it’s a fantastic car for a road trip, and I’m really loving it!

joshourisman,
@joshourisman@hachyderm.io avatar

@onelson probably, but there are also less than ideal health impact, and my lungs are already compromised…

I’m ok with bad decisions that only affect myself, however.

onelson,
@onelson@mastodon.social avatar

@joshourisman oh, I see.

I was going to say it's a much bigger deal having a stove or fireplace that runs on gas since gas pipelines leak methane throughout the entire system.

But sure. You gotta breathe. That's job one.

hrefna,
@hrefna@hachyderm.io avatar

Really I think has been very clever in their marketing for their truck.

They are focusing on its use as an "adventure vehicle." Where the multiple motors and great offroading capability matter a lot, and the range matters less. You take it up into the mountains, drive around for a while offroad, and then drive back.

Denver to Breckenridge is only, what, 80 miles? Imminently doable to go wherever you need, do your thing, and come back. Even with a camping trip in the middle.

dakkar,

@hrefna hitch the truck to the horses! 😁

hrefna,
@hrefna@hachyderm.io avatar

@dakkar That might work with the big horses if they were in shape, I have a few doubts on the minis…

crisp,
@crisp@hachyderm.io avatar

@snazzyq Any chance you can use your influence with to confirm whether the omission of drive gauges for non-perf./non-AT dual motors is intentional?

Buzz on forums is it seems like a bug—tutorial is still there—but reportedly support Staff have said it’s intentional.

(I’ve got an AT model myself, and gauges are here).

@crisp I’ve been told it’s a bug and will be coming.

Based on the image provided, (IMHO) it looks like a potential case for manufacturer negligence. They placed the charging port in a crumple zone. The front quarter panel is one of the most impacted parts of the vehicle. It’s amazing they passed crash testing with that design.

The is So Inefficient It Makes Other Look Thrifty
Did you really expect a Hummer to be economical? The EV only gets 1.48 miles per kWh. For comparison, the has a max battery size of 131 kWh gets 2.29mi/kWh. The large-pack variant of Dual Motor, with an 135-kWh battery gets 2.27mi/kWh.Why is Hummer EV so inefficient? Mostly its weight, tipping the scales at 9,063 pounds, 3000 of which are the battery alone.
