Using CRISPR gene-editing technology, scientists have successfully snipped out HIV from infected cells. Much more work needs to be done before this could possibly be used in people, but it’s a start...

"Any quest to prove beyond doubt that s are safe will run into the same roadblock, as nothing can be proven 100% safe. More than 2,000 studies and 20+ years of consumption by humans and animals have produced no evidence that GMOs represent an unusual health risk. Every major health and regulatory body in the world agrees."

Anti- folks want cool and new products so bad, they pretend they aren't and try to sell them.

Baker Creek Seeds caught selling a purple tomato, claiming it was a non-GMO variety. It was even the cover girl of their catalog!

An eBay listing for the Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds catalog. It shows lovely images of the "Purple Galaxy" tomato with deep color and perfect shape and luscious seeds. Editorial comment: And it is lovely. But it is also GMO.

There’s a strong movement in support of in upcoming European Parliament vote. Interestingly, the support is coming from scientific and environmental experts, including some farmers:

Nearly three dozen Nobel laureates have joined more than 1,000 scientists in urging members of the European Parliament to embrace science-based gene editing technology. New Genomic Techniques, they write in a petition, “hold immense promise for sustainable agriculture, enhanced food security, and innovative medical solutions.”

Surprising? But if you start with the definition of “organic farming” as farming that attempts to minimize negative impact on environment, it makes perfect sense. Genetically organic plant varieties require less herbicides and pesticides and less land, which means they actually do support biodiversity more than traditionally cultivated varieties.

Do you want to identify the neighbours of your favourite cells but are unsure where to start?

Check out our Primer, just out in @Dev_journal , for an overview of synthetic neighbour-labelling systems and of how they can be used in developmental settings.

Huge thanks to @CellySally, Tamina Lebek and Guillaume Blin for a real fun writing experience!

matt_mala,

Hello!

I'm a synthetic developmental biologist at The University of Edinburgh.

I'm interested in understanding how cells influence their neighbours in mammalian models of and disease.

I use to identify neighbours of cells of interest (e.g. healthy neighbours of mutant cells), and to engineer cell behaviour in response to these interactions.

I do this in pluripotent and their derivatives.

I look forward to keeping up with everyone's cool research!

American Academy of Pediatrics advises avoiding #GMO foods due to #glyphosate residues

Pediatricians urge more transparency & more research on GMO foods.

A new clinical report issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in #UnitedStates – to provide guidance to clinicians in providing pediatric care addresses concerns raised by families about #GM foods. It focuses on the risks of the herbicides sprayed on #GMfood & feed crops – especially glyphosate. https://mailchi.mp/gmwatch.org/american-academy-of-pediatrics-advises-avoiding-gmo-foods-where-practical-due-to-glyphosate-residues?e=bdb7fe5132

greenaspen,

@peterbrown that has been true since start of devolution, but your relief (and mine) at our status in may be about to end. Current plans by Westminster government to deregulate new crops and food will mean that Scottish government will be powerless to prevent their cultivation and sale here, courtesy of the single market Act …a device largely designed to emasculate our devolved powers on a wide front.

scottwilson,

OMG if this is true, it's HUGE!!!

HOWEVER, the price of treatment is in-freakin-sane. Normal people can't afford it.

scottwilson,

"Until now, the only known cure for sickle cell disease was a bone marrow transplant from a donor, which carries the risk of rejection by the immune system, in addition to the difficult process of finding a matching donor."

"[This new treatment] removes the need for a donor. Using CRISPR, it edits the DNA found in a patient’s stem cells to remove the gene that causes the disease."

Racjonalnie rozważamy to zagadnienie w kontekście środowiska człowieka, pszczół i pszczelarstwa. Mam nadzieję, że zachęciłem.

Kolejny ciekawy przypadek owada zaliczanego do tzw. szkodników.

1)Over the weekend, I decided to see how glyphosate interacted with the Complement System. I found a paper that said 'We dosed some fish with glyphosate and 61 days later, titers of C1-INH rose.' It then went in to explain that the fish were not in a closed system, had been subject to everything in the runoff flowing through their habitat, and that this may be a seasonal escalation.

Then I found a dozen papers that made that statement 'Exposure to glyphosate causes increases in C1-INH
