So I decided to try LocOS -KDE version on the 2014 mac Mini. It was reponsive but just like the heavier KDE neon at some point it ended locking up the GUI while I was doing updates. I could still exit with ALT+F2.

So I guess I need to try the XFCE build.

@lerudd I am really impressed with latest + XFCE. Easy to understand , fast, light. Efficient. Good choice of default stuff. 2010 Mini had become very sluggish on MacOS unless you stuck to an outdated version.

Playing 480p YouTube video on this Core 2 Duo with no hiccups using 1.8GB of RAM. This one has 8GB but they sold 2GB versions back then.

Samsung monitor connected to a Mac Mini plays a YouTube video on Firefox in LocOS (XFCE). A terminal shows htop with both cores at 70% and ram usage at 1.78 GB

@lerudd actually memory usage after reboot & autologin is only 350 mb when obtained from a remote SSH session (no app opened outside desktop + menu apps themselves)

users, where do you get your wallpapers? Looking for something cool for my new Neon desktop. You can also share yours! But remember to add ALT or tag with so others can help if you are out of spoons

ascherbaum,
@ascherbaum@mastodon.social avatar

@berniethewordsmith Currently have 641 nature/space pictures in a folder, my desktop switches to a new one every 5 minutes. Downloaded them over the years.

Partial upgrade to xubuntu 24.04 from 23.10, FS only accessible in recovery mode as root + wifi may be down. Help appreciated

before the issue, wifi app was configured not to start automatically because I sometimes change the mac after logging in. I usually enable it afterwards with iftop and then systemctl start NetworkManager.service && sudo nm-applet...

There's been so many Windows enshitification moments where people say this is our best opportunity for helping more people get their freedom trough .

Now we have maybe the best of these moments yet – W11 demanding new PCs, W10 being killed off, and this whole Recall shit.

Yet, after all this, I've never seen any really newbie friendly website explaining why and how to try Linux – with simple text and elegant design.

It seems to me the designers would be perfect for making this.

forteller,
@forteller@tutoteket.no avatar

@codemonkeymike Off the top of my head: short & sweet at the front, internal links to longer texts explaining more, no technical lingo, lots of screenshots only of GUI. Needs to cover at least:

  • Reasons to drop W (mostly inside a link, no reason to expand on the front page b/c most people there are likely interested)
  • What software can you run and what can you not, inc easy workarounds and who might not be able to switch
  • One recommend distro
  • Easy guide to choose between KDE and Gnome
forteller, (edited )
@forteller@tutoteket.no avatar

@codemonkeymike Also:

  • How to install. Serious question: Would it be possible to make a USB flasher that runs in the browser, so that you could just tell the person to plug in a memory stick and press this one button, and it flashes the iso for you with no extra steps? If not, make it as simple as possible, perhaps download just a flasher which then dls the correct ISO
  • Where and how to get support

The best would be if LUGs started meeting up again and it could connect you to your local LUG

Time for this week's and News! In this one, we have a terrible feature being added to , we have the # KDE 6.1 beta, and a 5 year plan for !

@thelinuxEXP can't believe what Microsoft is doing with Windows 11 now tbh. Thought they would want people to move across from 10. If they add stuff like the recall thing to Windows 10, they are screwing themselves over even more

MithilaGames,

@thelinuxEXP One correction, Bitlocker is gonna be default in upcoming windows version, it means that windows is going to be slow and lots of people is going to loss their data, it is good for Recall screenshot feature but bad for average widows user.

@jhx nice post. Reminded me I first encountered Linux when my friend got a cable modem (maybe 1999) and I only had dial up, and I started to research if he could be my ISP.

my smashed on the floor. touchscreen is slowly degrading; some letters impossible to type; and some buttons impossible to click...
Starting to think i have reached my limit... (cc @limitesnumeriques )

What phone should i get to install (e/OS/) ? Looking for an ethical alternative.

computersandblues,
@computersandblues@post.lurk.org avatar

@marieverdeil i'd look for something like a oneplus 6 or oneplus 6t. you should be able to find it used for an ok price, it has quite decent hardware, and was / is widely used, so there's a bit of momentum around it regarding driver support and stuff like that.

also, it's common to need to ask for vendor-approval to unlock your phone when installing other operating systems. this can get icky and annoying for various reasons. that's not the case with these models, you can just unlock it yourself.

Attention all , , Intel graphics driver, and experts - if you have any free time, please take a look at this issue we're facing:

https://github.com/sonnyp/linux-minibook-x/issues/7

Loading the edid should've worked in enabling 90Hz, but it did not. Any help or insight would be so, so appreciated.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@thomholwerda On the flipside, those things are supported by Fedora and there may be other Fedora users with the same problem so you raising the question and getting help might help others out as well and possibly even for those not running Fedora that stumble in from a search engine about your issue. All that to say, you're definitely welcome to ask about it there.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@thomholwerda It's a community distribution and not a commercial one. Think of it less as a support entitlement and more of an opportunity for the community to come together to help one another out and potentially make things better for users of those things in the broader Linux/open source world. Reporting bugs and problems is useful way to contribute, even if your immediate personal goal is just trying to get your laptop to work better with it.

No i do szeroko pojetych zabaw z Linuxem oczywiscie ;)

Is there a non-dev oriented distribution that is as light weight as AntiX but has strong minimalist opinionated defaults (one app per feature, all consistent) ?

One that would be fine on a 2010 mini and to be used by people averse to tech (read mail, browse web, libre office and that’s it).

ah, IT issues... yesterday I tripped a fuse when making dinner (the electric kettle somehow creates a power surge just before boiling, and when the oven runs at the same time it gets tripped).

When I put it back my small rpi server in the living room all of a sudden makes issues. It runs, and I can connect to it from the outside, but somehow not from inside my home network.
But I ping it and it seems to be on... but I just can't seem to ssh onto it anymore.

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

after troubleshooting way too long into the night this morning it finally dawns on me: when I tripped the fuse the rpi rebooted, but my laptop didn't. So when the network came back the laptop registered on the network first and by chance got the IP the rpi normally reserves for itself.

So all the time when I was trying to ping my little server I was pinging my own notebook and of course I saw it as online
