My first article in #Fedora magazine on moving to #Valkey has been published!

You should check it out if you're currently on #Redis and looking to move to something with an #OpenSource future.

Why is it impossible to buy eGPUs in Europe? They're all sold out. Is anyone even still making these?

The best one out there (Razer Core
X Chroma) came out in 2020. It's 4 years old! The runner-ups don't even have an ethernet port or other USB ports.

Maybe this is what should be making next.

@skerit I’ve been there! the best thing to do actually is invest in a regular desktop PC with standard (GPU) components and then run a Sunshine/Moonlight combo to connect to the desktop from anywhere and play your games at 120 fps.

Far cheaper and less vendor-lock.

Works great with potato-laptops as well.

@skerit@elevenways.be avatar

@sjosjo My use case is actually a bit different: I ditched my desktop and now only have 1 laptop, a Framework 16. I mostly need the eGPU for display connectivity. And as a glorified dock :)

Right, I've managed to compile UnrealEngine for Stable, which feels like an achievement. If only I could do the same for a reasonably modern version of Shotwell!

I see! An option might be to have a testing or unstable chroot on your stable system and use it with schroot (yes, s + chroot). I did this many times.

Since I've migrated from screen to tmux years ago, I always felt that missed screen's excellent support for serial devices.

But recently I found https://github.com/tio/tio which was developed exactly with that use case in mind and I couldn't be happier. Such an amazing tool.

is great, but the drivers and all the fuzz around their installation/removal is just chaotic.

Corb_The_Lesser,
@Corb_The_Lesser@mastodon.social avatar

@PJFDF Never install Nvidia drivers using Nvidia's instructions.

Only install Nvidia drivers packaged by your distribution following its instructions.

If your distribution doesn't package Nvidia's drivers or tell you how to install them, don't use Nvidia or use another distro.

I am NOT a compsci geek.

BUT I have managed to switch to on a 2010 MacBook Air and it's a revelation. It auto-updates, it's fast, easy and the most relaxed time I've had with so far.

So, if anyone out there is thinking of switching, give it a go!

(oh, and if you're on Mac, you may need to help the process)

@Jyoti did you have any issues with wifi/bluetooth? That's usually a snag with macbooks of that vintage. Welcome to the foss world anyway.

@Jyoti I've been going back and forth between installing Ubuntu or Mint. I've heard good things about Mint!
