"... the website loads in a special browser built into the app, rather than your phone’s default browser. In 2022, privacy researcher Felix Krause found that Meta injects special “keylogging” JavaScript onto the website you’re visiting that allows the company to monitor everything you type and tap on, including passwords. Other apps including TikTok do the same thing."

What the hell?? This is so creepy.

@noellemitchell @mxtthxw for anyone who is reading this, please make sure you're using #Firefox with #uBlock Origin and also if you're up for the learning curve, #LibRedirect, though that's not really helpful if you have to log in.

I would also like to suggest trying to migrate over to #PixelFed as an #Instagram replacement and #Friendica as a #Facebook replacement. It took me years to start using my #Mastodon account, the first step is creating it.

If you build it, they will come!

@noellemitchell

I don't have Facebook, Instagram nor WhatsApp on my phone. I've also enabled DuckDuckGo App Tracking Protection. Does that mean I'm safe from Meta's "Link History" and Metapixel tracking?

noellemitchell,
@noellemitchell@mstdn.social avatar

@jikodesu From what the article says it sounds like everyone is tracked by the Metapixel when you go to a website that has it installed on the site. There might be tracking blockers that can block it but I'm not sure.

@noellemitchell @nathans420 And of course this is just the latest thing, on top of deep snooping, social engineering that helped put the worst president in history into office in the U.S., and oh yeah, helping an attempted genocide roll out.

Curious how much more people still on Facebook are going to endure— realizing it’s their being there at all that makes any of the above even possible — before they realize they should leave.

When is enough finally enough?

So turning it off doesn't really turn it off?

@NIH_LLAMAS That's what it sounds like. Seems on brand for Meta.

Nothing at all evil about that. No way someone working their would be selling financial info on the side. No way would a corporation store things like health info you happened to put in

@noellemitchell I am pretty sure that's not legal.

Wow, and no matter how well we Firefox users protect ourselves; this practice is quite a bad move. People using other browsers may not be as well protected. This also means the race continues; privacy and security developers following and fighting the trends set by Meta.
To think Threads has come to the too. Sigh.

s/creepy/totally expected/

We told people years ago that accepting that ANY service is in the cloud is a question of trust, and you cannot trust these people (especially not Mark Z who graduated from creepy student directly to (creepy) billionaire => No opportunity to mature).

They told us: "We have nothing to hide".

If you ask me, they had it coming. My inlination to commiserate is very limited.

Upcoming sequel: s/Meta/Google/, or Apple or Mickysoft or ...

Dumb question: how does this stuff get allowed into the App Store?

If a smol developer slipped a keylogger into an app, wouldn’t that get shut down immediately?
