Overnight, lava eruption and flow have slowed down. Lava is flowing west and south, threatening the town of Hraun and the Suðurstrandarvegur road east of the barriers that protect Grindavík and is likely to reach the sea.

Two of the three roads (north and east) to Grindavík are closed. Land changes have caused some damage to Nesvegur, the road on the west.

Dotted with volcanoes, geysers and underground magma chambers, is no stranger to earthquakes and lava eruptions.

Iceland lies on the divergent boundary between the Eurasian plate and the N. American plate. It also lies above a hotspot, the Iceland plume, which is believed to have caused the formation of Iceland itself, the island appeared over the ocean surface about 16 to 18 million years ago.

What lies underneath the fissures and the town of Grindavik that is causing these eruptions?

Magma chambers, dikes and sills.

Sills form when magma intrudes between the rock layers, forming a horizontal or gently-dipping sheet of igneous rock.

Dikes rise upwards and are formed by magma pushing up towards the surface through cracks in the rock.

The dikes in the Grindavik region run all the way to the ocean, with magma forced up along fissures.

Here is an aerial view taken last night showing the town of Grindavík, the Blue Lagoon and power plant to its north and the encroaching lava flow towards its east.

There are lava barriers north and east of Grindavík; see post #1 for their locations.

Pics below show the clearing of lava and repairs of the Grindavíkurvegur road north of Grindavík.

Eruptions and lava flow continue near Grindavík in Iceland, but at much reduced rate than before.

Work was done to raise the defensive walls near Suðurstrandavégur (the south coast road).

Yesterday, Lava flowed down Melhólsnáma, north of Grindavík. The area includes a "mine" used to produce material for construction projects.
