charges are falsifying business records to hide payments in lead up to 2016 election to electorate

just one Trump supporter at the courthouse draped in a Trump flag.

's lawyer, , to return to stand. He negotiated the hush-money payment at the center of the case, & is expected to lay out details of the deal.

explains how the Trump campaign responded to the story about , who was paid $150k + work by the parent company of The as .

Hicks says that she was told by that he had not had an affair w/ McDougal, but that she did not remember him “verbatim” saying that he had no knowledge of that hush-money deal.

This is testimony of a lie shared w/the media & public.

was Trump's WH communications director when sued to be released from her contract that barred her from speaking about her relationship w/ .

Hicks testifies Westerhout, Trump's exec asst, texted her, "Hey - the president wants to know if you called David again?"

She adds that when she spoke to Trump after McDougal was interviewed on CNN by Anderson Cooper, she didn’t “recall him mentioning Mr. Pecker in those conversations."

This part of the testimony is more significant than perhaps it reads.

is having his official assistant check on contact w/ the ’s publisher David right when is trying to get out of part of her deal payment — her contract w/ parent company .

Which signals she wants to break the deal, basically she’s looking to talk, shortly thereafter is her Anderson Cooper interview.

Day 4 🧵 starts here.

Yesterday came to an abrupt end when the dishwasher leaked all over the floor. It’s fixed now, but what a mess.

Linus, Ramone & I are all doing well.

Yesterday’s 🧵 start:

testified that as part of the paid $150k for her story, w/no intention of ever publishing it.

Pecker expected repayment from . He asked who would handle it, & Cohen responded, “The boss will take care of it.”

Because Pecker had such a hard time getting Trump to pay, he was unwilling to buy the 3rd story: ’s.

“I am not a bank,” Pecker recalled saying.

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

said on Tues he had agreed to be the “eyes & ears” of the & used to deal w/threats to ’s reputation.

After the tape came out in Oct 2016, where Trump’s boasts about groping women, one of Pecker’s editors scrubbed an AMI publication’s website of a 2008 article describing Trump as a “playboy man.”

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

FYI
Yesterday, prosecutors asked to walk through his non-prosecution agreement in connection w/the 2018 federal investigation into the actions of & ’s parent company .

told the jury that it was offered to provide context & to help them assess Pecker's credibility. He added that it wasn’t evidence of 's guilt.

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

's point is that , The 's parent company, did print health columns by - ghostwritten by others - & put her on magazine covers, not in The NE but in its lifestyle publications.

But after executing the deal in Aug, the company did none of that until well after WSJ reporters revealed the existence of the deal in Oct 2016.

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

Again the deal w/ is beside the point when it comes to the charges. As I said, its discussion is just background.

is trying to discredit .

Bove asks, “If had been indicted, that would have affected the value of its assets?”

Pecker says yes but notes that AMI was never charged or prosecuted.

Yesterday, Pecker said, “We admitted to a campaign violation."

Bove notes "there is no violation in this agreement."

"In this agreement, no," Pecker says.

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

points out the section of the non-prosecution agreement stating the federal govt "will not criminally prosecute" .

Asked whether there's mention of a violation in the agreement, answers, “No."

Bove tries to get Pecker to say money wasn’t part of the Tower meeting agreement.

Pecker corrects Bove, “There was a discussion that I was going to be the eyes and ears of the campaign," including notifying of women selling stories.

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

shows the provision of 's non-prosecution agreement that reads:

"AMI's principal purpose into entering into the agreement was to suppress the model's story so as to prevent it from influencing the election."

Pecker agrees it was true.

Steinglass asks Pecker about a plan to sign over 's life rights to (it was abandoned)

Exhibit from yesterday detailing the original plan:

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

says he learned the phrase from the article; weird he didn’t already know it; earlier he testified it was “checkbook journalism”

Re ' story, Pecker says that he didn’t want to have anything to do w/a “porn star." (He said this yesterday too)

Pecker said he wasn't going to print it, buy it, or have anything to do w/it.

(Given the rest of the dirt he’s been all too happy to roll around in, it’s an odd line to draw, but he’s adamant)

Start of testimony day3 (I’m not counting jury selection or off days) 🧵

Publisher to Resume Testimony

, the longtime publisher of The , is expected to return to the stand & describe the deal w/ at the heart of the case, in which is charged w/ 34 .

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

is openly admitting to his involvement in the scheme & is doing so quite candidly.

Pecker is now detailing the agreement , Enquirer's parent company, struck w/ . The contract guaranteed she would be put on 2 magazine covers & that the company would have the right to publish fitness columns by her. It's worth noting how bizarre this set-up was. It wasn't just buying her story — it was also giving her work w/AMI.

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

The deal went above & beyond for & included the hiring of ghostwriters to pen her stories.

says that the contract was intended to stipulate that McDougal would perform "services" for , that there was a basis for the $150k she was receiving.

Pecker is asked if The had any intention to publish McDougal's story. Pecker is blunt: "No, we did not."
This is pure .

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

's last few minutes of testimony were key. He said that his company had disguised the payment to as a deal for services she would perform for .

This is important for the prosecution's case:

They have to show that the that they accuse of participating in to win the 2016 election was conducted through "unlawful means." Pecker just indicated that it was.

“…Dino the ? during my time at… , the ’s parent co, I was one of the editors pushing our reporters to confirm that story. ’s fitness columns were published only after I instructed a colleague…to put them together. These were all pretty normal things to do during…a bizarre period at AMI, when it was allegedly enlisted — in some ways that I saw & in others that I didn’t — into the service of helping become president.”

Kudos to reporter James Matthew, who's saying 'Pecker' non-stop but still manages to keep a straight face.

Especially when the attorney he was interviewing, Julie Rendelman, said "Pecker is going to be huge". She knew what she was doing...

We’re back with direct imaging with Masayuki Kuzuhara.

They used the #Subaru #telescope to observe nearby accelerating stars and search for substellar companions.

They discovered 4 substellar companions, one of which is the brown dwarf HIP 21152 B. The spectrum reveals water and methane. They further modelled the orbit, giving them a dynamical mass of around 28 Mjup.#ExSSV

Next up, we’ve got Thomas Vandal on as a tool to understand .

Directly imaged planets - albeit few - are crucial to help us understand planet formation scenarios.

Using JWST aperture masking interferometry, they targeted two systems, as part of an exploratory program.

On particular finding is that the choice of reference star is important. Longer exposures are needed to study the planets (reaching contrast).

Another program is probing the multiplicity of 20 Y dwarfs. will not work for faint primaries, so they use a thing called , using the telescope as an interferometer.

The WISE-0336 system is a Y-Y binary. For the 19 other targets they didn’t find anything, so they are looking at detection limits.
