As pro-Palestinian #protests continued to escalate across the country, ofcls & students at #BrownUniversity set a rare example on Tues: They made a deal.
Demonstrators agreed to dismantle their encampment at #Brown, which had been removed by Tues evening, & university leaders said they would discuss, & later vote on, divesting funds from companies connected to the #IDF campaign in #Gaza.
An overcast early fall afternoon at the Brown stadium, perhaps clearing after a brief shower. The Band waits before at the end of the home stands, then scrambles to center field.
41 students were arrested after the #BrownDivestCoalition organized a sit-in at University Hall that began Monday morning. The students were charged with “willful trespass within school buildings” by Brown’s Department of Public Safety.
"As we grapple with millennia of Jewish struggle and survival, we will not abandon our Palestinian cousins and peers, or let them stand alone. This genocide cannot continue."
"As she prepared to leave for college, she started to understand that most #Duke students there would not be like her.... 'I never felt like I was the poor kid, and then you get to Duke, and you realize some of these kids have yachts and have mansions.'... Lower-income students must navigate: the costs of joining fraternities and sororities, eating at off-campus restaurants, joining friends for spring-break." That was my experience at #BrownUniversity in the '80s, too. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/09/07/magazine/duke-economic-diversity.html
Sad news: Just heard that George P. #Landow passed away on 31 May at the age of 82. George was Professor Emeritus of English & Art History at #BrownUniversity and a noted #hypertext theorist. My condolences to his wife and family.
