#SocialMedia#Discord#AdTech#Ads#Advertising: "Discord had long been strongly opposed to ads, but starting this week, it's giving video game makers the ability to advertise to its users. The introduction of so-called Sponsored Quests marks a notable change from the startup's previous business model, but, at least for now, it seems much less intrusive than the ads shoved into other social media platforms, especially since Discord users can choose not to engage with them.
Discord first announced Sponsored Quests on March 7, with Peter Sellis, Discord's SVP of product, writing in a blog post that users would start seeing them in the "coming weeks." Sponsored Quests offer PC gamers in-game rewards for getting friends to watch a stream of them playing through Discord. Discord senior product communications manager Swaleha Carlson confirmed to Ars Technica that Sponsored Quests launch this week." https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/04/discord-starts-down-the-dangerous-road-of-ads-this-week/
When I opened #Discord this morning and saw this shit, I actually shouted "Fuck off" at my sceen.
I see Discord has reached stage three of onset enshittification, anyone know any other Skype/discord replacement?
[EDIT] This is apparently an ill-timed April fools joke, but it did not appear on my discord yesterday it turned up today.
To recap: using the native #Discord client on #macOS, each time my partner opens a stream, her #MacBook Air would slow to a crawl or even crash entirely, and she'd need to reboot and just no longer able to watch the stream, other than to switch to her PC.
The (shocking) solution: on her MacBook, use Discord through #Firefox instead. I doubt that it needs to be Firefox, perhaps #Safari would do too, but she used Discord on Firefox and her Mac's able to watch streams on Discord just fine now. She even said she's never experienced Discord this smoothly on her Mac before lol so if anyone has had any issues with Discord on their Mac recently, maybe try using the web client instead.
The sad and hilarious thing is that computer nerds already control the means of production they're just not doing anything with it other than what they're told.
@mhoye Then, they opted for #github to host their code, they built it around Github's CI/CD. They adopted #copilot. Ah, they also built their community on #discord and release their work on centralized proprietary platforms (e.g. #googleplay). Now, they own nothing.
we're experiencing about 5 spam attacks per day on #discord promoting teen porn and steam scams, and it's only getting worse lately. you'd think they could easily implement automatic detection for that, but nah, why would they, when they can slap more nitro promotions instead. absolutely dysfunctional platform...
My partner and I have been so behind our anime/shows we watch bcos her #MacBook Air just couldn't keep up w just abt anything anymore, especially watching a stream on #Discord. Her Mac would just slow to a complete halt the moment she enters a stream, even when I stream it at 480p. The only way we'd be able to watch then is if she's at her desk on her PC, but that doesn't happen as much as when we're not fasting (lunch on weekends and dinner ~daily, whereas while fasting almost neither).
#SocialMedia#Discord#ContentModeration#Censorship: "In an unusual weaponization of content moderation tools, members of hacking and fraud focused Discord servers are deliberately uploading child abuse imagery to have their rivals’ servers shut down, 404 Media has found.
Vendors in the digital underground have sold banning services for sites like Instagram for years. What makes this Discord attack different is that it is much more clearly criminal in nature—both for the person uploading child abuse imagery to a target server, and potentially for someone who downloads it, accidentally or otherwise. Broadly, the Discord attack is a continuation of using content moderation systems that are designed to protect users, but which can be leveraged maliciously to target others.
When projects/communities force me into proprietary messaging platforms, I just wish it was at least #Discord and not the unholy fuckery that is #Slack.
Slack is terrible at multiple spaces to be part of.
Hey tech/SM companies: when you send an email out summarizing changes to your ToS/Policies, don't just tell us what SORT of things were changed, summarize WHAT YOU CHANGED. FROM WHAT, TO WHAT.
Making me read the entire policy and also somehow have access to the previous policy is OBTUSE BULLSHIT.
How do you figure out what font(s) Discord desktop is using? Mine currently displays Japanese and Chinese text as Unicode "oh noes, I can't find a glyph" rectangles. There aren't any font settings in the app other than size. 🤷
