Another loose rock from Ardalanish beach in SW Mull from this morning. This is a really distinctive rock, from the andesitic sills forming the lower part of the Glencoe volcanic sequence, 85km to the NE. Transported by glaciers. The purple alteration is partly hematite, but also distinctive pink manganese-rich epidote , which you can see in the core of the pale patch on the left of the cobble.

On this day in history. This is the upper end of Glen Coe, a glen infamous for the massacre of the Glen Coe MacDonalds carried out by government troops who were billeting with them 332 years ago today on 13 February 1692. I've just blatantly stolen these amazing photos (taken yesterday) from my friends at Heart of Glencoe's Facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/heartofglencoeholidays ). Can't wait until I'm up there next week running a winter skills course. I've still got spaces on the February course (9th-11th feb) if you fancy taking your hill walking to the next level. More info here: https://www.arranwildwalks.com/blog/2023/10/31/winter-skills-weekends

A view towards the head of beautiful Glen Etive, which runs for 14 miles south-west from the upper end of Glen Coe to the head of Loch Etive. Once there you turn round and come back: but it's a wonderful drive to somewhere very special. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/glenetive/glenetive/index.html
