The coat of arms of the Merchants' House of Glasgow on the gates at the main entrance to the Necropolis. Below this is the name William Brown, a Scottish merchant and philanthropist who was the Dean of Guild at the time the gates were created. Designed by David and James Hamilton, the gates date from 1838 and were originally set at the western end of the Bridge of Sighs leading over the Molendinar Ravine which separates the Catherdral and the Necropolis.

An early morning view from the Necropolis across to the buildings of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. While the Necropolis first opened in the 1830s, the hospital has been based on this site since the 1790s.

Morning Folks! I realized this morning that I had not really talked about my "map blaster" of choice for the #PathOfExile Necropolis League. I've made versions of this character several times now but this time around I am utilizing the brand new Elemental Hit of the Spectrum gem with the tanky goodness of a Champion.

I was not entirely certain I would actually get around to blogging today. Eventually, I discovered the oomph to make something happen. Between yesterday morning and this blog post, I have knocked out three more challenges in Necropolis League and am nearing a few more.

I talk a bit more about the ones that I feel are realistic for me to complete this league.

I love this shot of a thrush sitting on some old gravestones which I took on an early morning walk in the Necropolis in Glasgow a few weeks ago.

Glasgow Necropolis. Built on the remains of an extinct volcano, it was opened in 1833. While there are around 3,500 grave monuments, there are up to 50,000 people buried within it, meaning most burials remain unmarked.

A beautifully sculpted Celtic Cross, with an Art Nouveau feel to it, on the grave of Alexander McCutcheon, a former treasurer for the City of Glasgow who died in 1914 and who is buried in the city's Necropolis.

Reserection Monument by James Philip in Glasgow's Nercopolis. It's a memorial for 2nd Lieutenant Ian Campbell Chrystal of the Seaforth Highlanders who was killed near Cavrelle in France on 1st May 1917 aged 29, and is buried in St Laurent Blangy.

James Philip was one of Aberdeen's finest granite masons, and as well as creating sculptures for a number of Scottish war memorials, he also sculpted eight figures for the Titanic Memorial in Liverpool.

This memorial in Glasgow's Necropolis marks the re-burial site of the remains of Glasgow University professors and their families which were originally interred in the nearby Blackfriars Churchyard.

This church once stood on the eastern side of the High Street and could trace its origins back to 1246. In 1573, it became a possession of Glasgow University, which, at that time, was also based on High Street.

When the University moved to its current Gilmorehill site in the West End of the city in the 1870s, the church and its churchyard (as well as the neighbouring old college buildings) was cleared to be replaced by the College Goods Station and Railway Yard.

At this time, the remains from the graveyard were moved to the Necropolis after a record was made of all the legible gravestones. This record is now housed in Glasgow's Mitchell Library.

Morning Folks! This past Friday was the league launch for and this morning I talked about the good and bad bits. Generally speaking, it is a bad league mechanic but a generally solid sandbox state for the game.

Morning Folks! This morning's post took a bit longer than I thought it would because I kept getting interrupted.

I am really pumped about the Necropolis league that starts tomorrow in and it has very little to do with the league mechanic. I am extremely interested in the sweeping Atlas and Scarab changes and how I think it will lead to a more varied mapping experience.

This is one of my favourote memorials in the Glasgow Necropolis. It's the gravestone of the theatre impresario John Henry Alexander who died in1851.

Alexander was a major figure in Glasgow theatre in the first half of the 19th Century, but he was also involved in a long-running fued with fellow theatre owner John Seymour.

At one point, both leased separate parts of the Caledonian Theatre on Dunlop Street and used to try their best to sabotage each others shows.

One favourite trick was for one to hire a brass band to perform in their part of the theatre when they knew the other was putting on a serious drama. The situation was eventually sorted by a magistrate who decreed that they each needed to run their performances on alternate nights.

Love the detail on the grave monument for the theatre impresario John Henry Alexander in the Glasgow Necropolis, especially the rather wind-blown foliate green man. I'm not too sure if the cherub is meant to be headless, but I doubt it.

Have you ever heard of the London Necropolis Railway Company?

I hadn't, until someone shared a short video with me, which I immediately thought must be a hoax.

But no, it checks out, and is an incredible story: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Necropolis_Railway
