Which of the Mastodon' front ends add extra functionality you really appreciate?

For example sengi would split long posts up so they ran over several threaded posts. I thought that was pretty cool!

Didn't one of the Masto front ends do quote posts?

SparkIT,

@ArtBear I think has quotes. I also like that it marks with a green shade posts from groups and that the translation tool also works for the alt-text

@cheeaun did you break anything in ? a few days ago, the page started being bigger than the viewport, so i had to scroll a bit to get to the write icon. now a toot's RMB does not appear, the notification pane doesn't either, and the toot's context pane looks like this:

You must be viewing the page as an unauthenticated user

You must be viewing the page on a larger screen or in landscape view.

Even then, if you don’t have your browser window stretched out past 1180px width - it is hidden.

Even if you get this far, if you have the advanced web interface enabled, it doesn’t show.

Unless you use or where they just show up between your profile data and the list of your posts. On any server even if you're logged into it!

Clicking one filters the list of posts to just the ones with that tab.

phanpy.social is cool, very well-designed, but after trying it for a couple days I still think I prefer Elk. Phanpy is just too slow. Every action has several seconds of lag, especially after scrolling for a while. And this makes it completely unusable on mobile.

I wonder if this is related to their tech stacks. Phanpy uses Preact, Elk uses Vue. React sites always feel slow. I'm not very familiar with Vue, but this is a point in favor of it. Elk always feels snappy.

@phanpy thank you for making such an excellent way to use Mastodon! Is there a way to set a language filter? I follow a few hockey related tags and my timeline has been filling with posts in Swedish. Sadly my ancestors intentionally made their descendants ignorant of their mother tongue so I don't know it. @FediTips @feditips

@cheeaun again me with questions. when you find a toot like this one and like this other one:

https://fosstodon.org/@bignose/111775074307968376

do you do anything in particular when:

a) showing the toot in the timeline; and
b) when showing the toot's context on the right?

I have the impression that you somehow figure out it's another toot and do things differently to any other type of link. How do you figure that out?

GeoffBySea, to random

Now that's really sensible.

Phanpy.social every so often shows a collection of in your timeline but in a superbly intuitive way.

Instead of having to scroll through these boosts vertically and miss out on other stuff, it appears as one post in the timeline which you then scroll through horizontally. Genius!

Is there a Firefox plugin that redirects Mastodon links from other instances to your own instance automatically, so that you can boost and reply without entering your domain?

@pluralistic @unwiredben I am a happy user of , IMHO the most usable Mastodon client, running entirely in your browser.

On all posts, it allows you to switch to the instance's view (and back).

When I clicked on a post using phanpy, I used to be able to click on replies and like, boost, or reply to them. Now if I want to do that I have to switch to the standard Mastodon desktop app. Is something broken?

cheeaun,
@cheeaun@mastodon.social avatar

@jredlund hi here. You can perform those actions by clicking on the timestamp or right-click (or long-press on touch devices) that'll show a menu containing those actions.

@admin@hear-me.social avatar

I just deployed the alternative Phanpy UI for hear-me.social. I much prefer using Phanpy to using the Mastodon UI. It is a wonderful alternative UI.

The URL is https://phanpy.hear-me.social

Why I like Phanpy:

The ability to see the entire threaded conversation in a block in the correct order is a fantastic improvement.

The ability to see boosts set apart in their own block is also great. I can skim to see what I want to read, or just skip over them if I'm rushing.

If you have accounts on other servers, you can link to them as well and switch between them within the same app.

The UI just looks much nicer.

There are other nice touches.

I deployed it to a small instance (2GB, 1vCPU), and I'll see if I need to resize it. It seems to need minimal resources.

This is a beta deployment.

Can anyone point me in the direction of an ActivityPub implementation suitable for client integration testing?

Something well maintained, current and easy to run as part of a test suite? Maybe something in a Docker container?
