Hoy es...... ¡Bandcamp Friday!
#KingRichardsFaire is the largest #renfaire in New England, and its owner, #DickShapiro, extracts a reported $400k/day - a sum that is only possible thanks to systematic and illegal worker misclassification, which lets him pay performers sub-minimum wages and deny them benefits:
If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this thread to read or share, here's a link on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
Keyes's contempt notwithstanding, it's clear why Bandcamp workers need a union - after the company was flipped twice in rapid succession, its new owners, #EpicGames and #Songtradr, fired all its unionized workers. Keyes responded to coverage of this mass firing by calling the #Pitchfork reporters who wrote about it "absloute amateur journalists."
To call #EpicGames selling #Bandcamp to #Songtradr a friggin' mess would be an understatement. This thing has been orchestrated from the very start and is only another proof why Epic has one of the shittiest leaderships in the industry.
Not only did they sell the company after a year. They've now laid off half (!) of Bandcamp's staff, #Songtradr hasn't recognized Bandcamp's union, #Bandcamp United, and it appears most of the laid off staff actually were union members, despite Songtradr not having any information on union members.
Unless, of course, Epic gave it to them.
Seriously, screw #EpicGames!
“A recent action-oriented advert for Taco Bell’s $2 grilled chicken burritos has a track from the pop-punk band Meet Me @ The Altar. The song scores 90% on Songtradr’s energy meter and features fast, aggressive chord progressions, melodic hooks, and a youthful vibe…” - and so it begins #Bandcamp#songtradr#ugh
Another #BandcampFriday done, if you’re not aware already, it’s worth having a look at this petition asking #songtradr to recognise the union after their purchase of #bandcamp from #epic
'“Based on its current financials, Bandcamp requires some adjustments to ensure a sustainable and healthy company that can serve its community of artists and fans long into the future,” says a statement provided by Songtradr chief marketing officer Lindsay Nahmiache.'
This statement feels like bad news for @bandcampunited
I'm worried about the direction things are heading.
In light of #Bandcamp being sold to #Songtradr, workers being locked out of internal systems by #Epic, and layoffs looming, @bandcampunited needs all our support.
Today's #BandcampFriday may possibly be the last, so if you have some disposable income now would be a great way to support independent artists that rely on the platform!
So it took them just over two weeks to sack half of the #Bandcamp staff - #Songtradr and #Epic aren't faffing about when it comes to their bottom line!
HOLY SHIT it may be the last #BandcampFriday EVER, depending on how the sale of Bandcamp to Songtradr eventually shakes out. Word on the street is that Epic sold Bandcamp when its employees sought to unionize. Time will tell if #Songtradr makes things better or worse for artists and employees.
In the meantime, if you've been enjoying any indie artists and you have yet to show your appreciation by purchasing their music, TODAY would be a superb time to do so! #IndieMusic#NewMusic#Music#Pop
The #Bandcamp union (#BandcampUnited) has received a letter from new owner #Songtradr which states that there will be layoffs. So they are asking people to email “Paul <at> Songtradr.com” and ask him to recognize the union and keep Bandcamp the way it is.
