Into the Void ...

Introduction time ... 👋

I'm a husband, father of three, enthusiastic FreeBSD and Emacs user, and hardware and software hobbyist. I have rescue greyhounds, enjoy riding my 2000 SV650S, and am (very slowly) learning the alto recorder and guitar. My daily drivers are a PineTime watch, a Pixel 3 running LineageOS, a ThinkPad X250 running FreeBSD, and a ThinkPad W540 running Mint for (casual) gaming.

You can find my personal stuff on Gemini at gemini://duncan.bayne.id.au/.

My day job is with Swift Navigation, where I'm working as a director of engineering in the cloud software space. My first job in tech was as a C developer, working on Internet server software with Netwin in New Zealand.

You can find my professional stuff on the Web at https://duncan.bayne.id.au/.

Has anyone had any luck getting the digitizer on their "tablet" (mine's an X200t) working under ?

I followed the steps in the wiki, but no dice.

So... I'm posting this from my X201 "slabtop". I've completely removed the top lid/screen and am connected directly to an external monitor.

Why? Because SCIENCE

(Article soon to be posted once I write it :P)

Got around to writing about my X201 slabtop:

I have acquired one of those super rugged cop laptops. This thing is HEV-EEE, or as the kids say, “oh lawd he comin.” First order of business: defenestration.

I keep a little X220 on my work desk to do all the things my state-of-the-art MacBook, given to me by work, can't do.

Regularly comes in handy.

I like , I just wish it didn't take 14 seconds to resume from S3 suspend on my X200

Also, the system uptime is actual runtime and not time since it was switched on, although now I'm not sure what the "correct" way is.

Still looking for my "forever Linux laptop." The one I'll put ALL my stickers on.

At one point I thought it would be the @system76 Oryx Pro but 17-inchers are big and & power hungry.

Then I wanted it to be my Apple M1, but app compatibility (ARM) has me a little concerned.

I need all day battery life, great display, MODEST dedicated GPU or strong integrated GPU.

Should I just do what everyone else has been doing and buy a #ThinkPad? The T-14 looks pretty sweet.

@killyourfm @system76 Personally I'd go with the . My current daily is a P14S AMD Ryzen 5 and I love it. Certainly lasts all day and everything works under .

lianedubowy,

@killyourfm I do use a t-14 with and I can't complain.

Updated by plain black background to the "exploded" X201. Just seemed appropriate.

Some people get big tasks on their first day but never again

kkarhan,

@stux the sheer fact that people actually defend this design is just flabberghasting.

Like "It OnLy TaKeS lIkE fIvE mInUtEs To ChArGe!" or "ThEn ChArGe It OvErNiGhT!" isn't a form of gaslighting.

Meanwhile I'm just buying up new-old-stock Keyboards and wired mice and controllers...

Still mad at for actively REMOVING a function from their new Compact Keyboard with UltraNav II...

But it does still allow charging whilst being used...

Decided I'm going to go back to my old hobby of buying "broken" on Ebay, refurbishing them and reselling them (usually at no profit). This gets affordable computers into the hands of people who need them, prevents landfill, and I get to do something other than work.

Authentec Fingerprint Scanners - Full Specifications (AES2810 & AES2550)
https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2012/07/athentec-fingerprint-scanners-full-specifications-aes2810-aes2550/

Last year, I wrote about how Authentec wouldn't support their fingerprint readers on Linux. I've been chatting to the good folk at Authentec, and they've agreed to release the specification documents!

So if you want to code up an interface for the AES2810 or AES2550 you can!

A word of note, the best way to get the latest version of these documents is to register for the Authentec Developer Program. You then need to drop the team a note asking to get access to these specific documents - devportal AT authentec.com

That way you will get informed when there is a new release of other sensor's specs or updates.

So, here are the documents 🙂

NB, I specifically asked the development team about sharing these files. They said:

Since we have released the documents without requiring any NDA or other such agreement signing we can't prevent you from sharing them.
