The Atchuelinguk wildfire is burning in tundra in the lower Yukon River area north of Marshall in western Alaska (Yupik county). This is prime time for tundra wildfire: after snowmelt but before vegetation green-up, so last year’s dried grass and brush.

Got some more notices from Watch Duty today about a wildfire in my county but nowhere near me — a fire that was quickly extinguished. I smiled when I saw the familiar-to-me reporter name: Michael Silvester, who is in New Zealand. (He was CA Fire Scanner on Twitter.)

If you're in the Western US and at all concerned about wildfires, I highly recommend the Watch Duty app.

"Coal seam fires, which can smolder underground for years before coming to the surface, pose a threat to firefighters due to the noxious gases they emit and the potential for burned ground below them to collapse. They are virtually impossible to extinguish and carry over from year-to-year smoldering under the snow cover. "

Indoor Air Quality: Wildfire Smoke & Cooking

With wildfire smoke season here, we all need to think about air quality inside where we spend most of our time. This article provides multiple examples measuring the air quality inside my home from wildfire smoke and cooking.

The web version of this article with nice table of contents and easy to share with others can be found here ( https://docs.google.com/document/d/1x0yA0ebo8HkNYCps_CZPqGE0-My_4toLiGSR9M-D7-w/edit?usp=sharing ).

Graph of PM 2.5 Wildfire Smoke Pollution Levels Inside & Outside House with significantly higher levels of PM outside and in garage, and higher levels of PM in unfinished sections of basement with very little PM in finished rooms and those with HEPA filters.
Graph from co2.click portal showing a massive spike in particulate matter (PM) levels past 50 ug/m3 on Christmas Eve. More info at: https://co2.click/

Too funny. Can’t make this up.

Currently if King County WA needs to produce an evacuation map they only do so as a PDF. County emergency management (EM) staff says it would be very expensive to have county GIS staff produce an interactive evacuation map.

I volunteered to write data conversion code (geojson > kmz) so King County WA could use Google maps as an interactive evacuation map.

EM staff says policy prohibits them from using outside help that is not officially approved. So I contacted county procurement asking how I can get approved as a volunteer consultant. See pic for their reply.

1/_ 🧵 Many counties (including mine - King County WA) use the CodeRed system for alerting people about a wildfire evacuation. Recently I traded email with county staff and got some details about how this works.

If your county’s emergency management web page shows they use CodeRed then there should be a signup link. When you signup, enter your address or use the map by dragging the marker, zooming in and repeating until the marker is where you live.

If my area is ordered to evacuate then I want to get that message by every means possible. We have a landline so I entered our “Home phone” number, my cell number and my main email address that I check the most often.
