I co-teach a class on product management to undergrads in the spring. Last year our total AI chatbot policy was "if you use it, cite it!" ... and some did, and definitely didn't. This year we've attempted to completely revamp the curriculum to encourage students to learn how to use these tools so that there's no temptation to "cheat". Anyone else here in a similar boat? As odd as the rage-filled tone of this post is, I in fact get a sense of Pre-Burnout Energy (PBE 😆) from this person. They chalk it up to everyone around them and managers being 'stupid', but I rather think it is panic. Panic looks & smells like incompetence.
Corporations are powered by greed and greed means they must say yes to nearly everything a client might want & when they want it. Work piles up & the top panics.
And look, we do this to ourselves in this capitalist system. Why do you think so many high-powered, rich and 'productive' people in our business environments are so deeply unhappy, unfulfilled, and angry?
But ever growing profits is the paradigm we are in, which means endlessly doing more with less, which is impossible and breeds panic. It means companies can't really turn down a sale. It means they won't hire more staff.
And no matter how self-defeating and illogical it is... daily standups that last an hour, meetings that constantly break focus & chop up productive time, comes from a breakdown at higher levels and lack of trust and accountability.
Companies who are in this mess are shooting themselves in the foot. They need to step back and build trust and clarity then let go & stop helicoptering over their knights. And listen to developers when they tell you what they really need. Learn to be productive without panicking and sometimes that means saying no.
