I had to mow the lawn and trim the hedges around the beehives, so I had to put my bee suit on in case the bees got stroppy about the tools. It's 38°C in the shade and 70+% humidity. And I poked myself in the eye with my sunnies while putting them on under my hood.
Trimming hedges with tears and sweat pouring out of me was not fun. The bees were very chill about things.
Luckily we have a pool, so I just flopped into that afterwards to recharge.
Comb-crested Jacana navigating the waterlilies carrying chicks under his wings. There are 3 chicks in this brood, so either one is out independently, or has its legs pulled up out of sight
TIL it's the male that does this. Apologies to this guy, who I probably referred to as mum at the time
The book says the nest is mostly constructed by the gander, but after that incubation is shared between parents. Here one of his (usually two) mates is on nest duty while he watched from a nearby branch overhead
This one brought to you by a female Red-Backed Fairywren, who appears to be mid-song but was actually panting in last Friday's heatwave. She (and the photographer) should have moved out of the sun
To be fair, her black and red mate was below panting in the shade. There wasn't anywhere truly to hide from the heat outdoors
Side-note, does anyone #brisbane have an electrician they'd recommend? I have a broken light switch needs replacing, but it'd also be great to chat about replacing my grubby old gas cooker with induction.
Well that's my new years celebration. BBQ was a success, everyone's gone home, dishwasher's running, bins are emptied, and the vacuum cleaner just finished tidying up. It's 9:40 PM 👀
Saw a reflection in my window, turns out there was a surprise fireworks barge down my end of the river. So I went for a walk. Happy new year from UTC+10.
Fudge. These storms sneaking up from the Gold Coast will undoubtedly hit Sandgate or Bracken Ridge just in time to stop me going to the pool in either place
