with most of Africa down because the cables are broken and MS/Azure down in large parts because.... MS.... my little self hosted Mastodon server still chugs away.... go you good thing. #Decentralize now....
Github is great for software development, but it is monopolistic and it seems about time that we all migrate to something that has the same flavour of openness and freedom as the activitypub based fediverse.
I know that gitlab is working on a solution but it might take some time and we also need other players on the scene.
Is there an activitypub based git server out there?
Can someone explain something to me about #peertube? As I understand it, if two people watching a video at the same time, it exchanges data between them, so save bandwidth for the server - but does this happen often? Every time I watch a video on peertube, there is maximal 1 other peer online. So the theory is great, but does it actually help anyhow in the real world? #decentralize#fediverse
Hi, welcome to Hax0rbana where #security is number one priority!
Today I placed another $400+ order from Mouser to get components to build more #Signet devices. Hardware password managers for everyone who wants them!
I'm here to go beyond federation and go fully #decentralized.
Why would anyone want to use #TornadoCash on #Ethereum / #ETH, which is written in the systemically unsafe Programming Language that is #Solidity when #Monero :monero: / #XMR exists?
@cromargaen Again: #Monero :monero: gets a pass because it's actually working as a payment system and doesn't see bs like "#GasWars" and goes out of it's way to actually #decentralize itself and not implement centralization efforts like "#ProofOfStake"...
If you're going to the trouble of moving your community, why would you move from one centralized service to another? I've given this advice to a number of #reddit subs so far:
Start your own hosted website to post a daily summary of community news.
Move your community to a federated service like #Lemmy or #Kbin.
I think not putting all one's fanwork eggs into one website basket is a good, smart thing to do, but also, I remember as I'm sure many of you do the days of "walked 15 miles uphill both ways in the rain looking for a fanfic & when you found one you didn't even enjoy it" lmao... It sucked. There's a reason people flocked to AO3 for fic instead of LJ, DW, Tumblr et al, you know? It didn't only happen because of trendiness or the rise of Big Social.
I disagree with the current CEO of Mastodon about his stance on mid-sized instances. We don't want to be run in isolation, we are part of the Fediverse. "Normal users just want the default", he can repeat that as many times as he wants, it doesn't make it true because of that.
Diversity is the DNA of the Fediverse and Mastodon is just one part of the whole. Thousands of people spend their time and money to make it successful. Anyone who dismisses that and single-handedly tries to market the Fediverse as a Mastodon brand and use "crowding out" techniques to prevent users from even being encouraged to choose an instance from a diversity will ultimately fail.
I am super disappointed with the direction Mastodon Corporation is taking. If there is not enough headwind here soon, then sooner or later it will lead to a schism.
I don't think people are realising the danger the Fediverse is in.
The only thing stopping corporations and VCs taking over this place is that the Fediverse is spread out on many different servers, which makes it very difficult to purchase.
If most of the Fediverse ends up on mastodon.social, which is now a strong possibility, there will be nothing to stop most of it being sold to Musk or Zuckerberg or whoever.
The bigger mastodon.social becomes, the more likely a buyout is to happen.
Excellent deep dive on the current state of the #fediverse and #mastodon, with a detailed history of the movement to #decentralize#social, and predictions about where we go from here.
