Forgejo started as a soft fork of Gitea. Over time, it developed its own identity, adopted both development and governance practices - to ensure the stability, quality, and openness of the project - that made it more challenging to remain a soft fork. In early 2024, a decision was made to become a hard fork, and for Forgejo to forge its own path going forward. This post explains the consequences this decision will have.
We are excited about @forgejo becoming a hard fork, and trust the maintainers to double down on their commitment to a secure and reliable software forge. It was a pleasure to work with #Forgejo in the past year, and we thank everyone involved for turning the fork into a successful project.
Forgejo v7.0 is available with translations in Bulgarian, Esperanto, Filipino and Slovenian; SourceHut builds integration; support for the SHA-256 hash function in Git; source code search by default and more. It also is the first Long Term Support version. The adoption of semantic versioning is the reason for the version bump from v1.21 to v7.0 and is compatible with existing tools. ✨

Forgejo may become a hard fork of Gitea; user research is on the way to figure out the scope of moderation in Forgejo instances; a new requirement for tests was added to the development workflow; the "You pushed on branch" user experience was improved; the migration of translations to Weblate began.
🛎️ Heads up to Forgejo admins: The Forgejo security team discovered a critical security issue affecting #Forgejo, #Gitea and #Gogs. Check out https://forgejo.org/2023-11-release-v1-20-5-1/ to learn more and immediately perform an upgrade, especially when you have untrusted users on your instance (i. e. open registration).
Codeberg users: Don't worry, our instance has already been patched in coordination with the Forgejo security team.

NLnet awarded a grant to Forgejo to develop its release process and additional features, starting June 2023. User blocking was implemented to protect repositories you own from unwanted interactions, an essential self-service moderation tool. An extended installation section was added to the documentation as well as a user and admin documentation for Forgejo Actions.

A security issue related to Long-term Authentication was fixed and backported. Four release candidates were published for v1.21 and the documentation updated to cover the new functionalities. A service request was published for the benefit of German schools. Solutions were also identified for bootstrapping a fully Free Software hosting provider including Forgejo.
TIL: When you use #codeberg and/or #forgejo, you can pimp your profile page by creating a repository called .profile (the dot is important) with a single file called README.md in it. Once done, the Markdown in said file will be shown as default content on your profile page. This is going to be fun! https://codeberg.org/jwildeboer
#Forgejo 1.20 is released. While we are porting some Codeberg changes and testing the migration, you can already experience the full potential at https://next.forgejo.org - hosted on Codeberg's infrastructure.
Join with your Codeberg account, let your team test-drive the new features, and report the problems you find before other #Codeberg usres experience them.
I'm building a smol web app for someone that displays issues on #GitHub, #GitLab and #Gitea resp. #Forgejo together.
Goal is to ease migration from one forge to another.
I could imagine that businesses and Open Source projects would consider this interesting for themselves.
Question for you: would you be willing to donate a small amount of money for tasks like these, so that I can focus on them? (Think Patreon-like funded work for the commons).
#Forgejo v1.20.5-1 was just released! This is a critical security release.
We strongly recommend that all installations are upgraded to the latest version as soon as possible. Read more in the companion blog post https://forgejo.org/2023-11-release-v1-20-5-1/.
I am currently working on #accessibility in #forgejo. And I discovered a problem with focus where it is not possible to navigate the page with "tab", a dropdown makes the focus skip to the end of the page and you end up in a loop.
Can someone recommend ways or tools to debug focus in webbrowsers? I have a hard time to see how the focus skips there. Any hints are welcome.
#Codeberg would not be here without all the free time volunteers donate to our platform and to upstream projects. However, we can give our project a rocket boost with your help. We have compensated a small share of time for their work in #Forgejo, and we have seen immense progress we would waited long for.
It would have been convenient for people in need of #Forgejo releases to rely on this mirror while Codeberg was unavailable because of a DDoS attack this week. code.forgejo.org is in a different country and they are unlikely to go down simultaneously. Both are in Europe but hundreds of kilometers apart.

Forgejo v1.20, was published and was 100% built with Forgejo Actions. Codeberg was upgraded 10 August and hit an unexpected issue. It was quickly resolved and the fix will be integrated in the next release. Meanwhile development continued on the code, the website, the documentaion etc. All signs of a healthy project that needs your help to keep going in the long run. 🙏
Hi everyone, we are doing user research for #Forgejo, the software that powers #Codeberg.
If you have 30 minutes in the next week, consider participating in the interviews to help us get insights in how you interact with Codeberg and how we can improve the experience for you.
Finally, it's there: Blocking users has recently been added to #Codeberg, thanks to the #Forgejo team.
You feel offended or disturbed? Getting rid of them is just one button away.
Please be reminded: If the users are likely also a problem for other users, save them the trouble and report them to abuse@codeberg.org or by mentioning @moderation in an issue.
Turns out #Gitea was turned into a for-profit company two years ago. The software remains MIT-licensed, but it's now centered around enterprise solutions
However Gitea's community was not happy about this and created a soft fork that remains fully-compatible, community-driven. It's called #Forgejo and #Codeberg switched to using it in favor of Gitea.
