"Without rot, life turns to stone. Rot—goopy or crusty or smelly or crumbly or stringy as it may be—is what churns life back to life."
Really, really cool article. I have seen the work of both the brown and white wood rot but never knew the difference between and that that was what was causing the tree to look like that!!!
These fungi are so tiny! I'm amazed my cheap macro lens phone attachment thing was able to capture it at all (I did zoom in a little so the tiny water droplets were easier to see). No clue what kind these are...
I suspect this is Badhamia utricularis, a species of slime mould in the family Physaraceae on a dead limb, most likely from an oak tree..
To give you some idea of scale, each of those yellow globules is less than 1 millimetre diameter. This is a 20 shot photo stack to get enough depth of field.
I’ve been on Lemmy and Mastodon for a little while but still not super active on either, and haven’t really kept up with fediverse stuff as a whole....
Mastodon is 70%+ of all activitypub posting. It’s got a lot more content due to its format. It’s just a different experience? Sometimes overwhelming, but then you just look at #mosstodon or #catsofmastodon or #fungiverse and life is better.
👀 ? Spotted these unusual "creatures" while walking in the woods yesterday. Any thoughts on what they could be? They have a rather "extraterrestrial" appearance. 🤔
Hair ice, also known as ice wool or frost beard, is a type of ice that forms on dead wood and takes the shape of fine, silky hair. It is somewhat uncommon, and has been reported mostly at latitudes between 45 and 55 °N in broadleaf forests ... In 2015, the fungus Exidiopsis effusa was identified as key to the formation of hair ice.
First serious attempt of painting something with ink made from Shaggy Mane Mushrooms. And OMG, did you folks know that this stuff ✨sparkles✨? I had no idea!
What's your wider fediverse setup?
