The Frasher Foto Postcard Collection https://oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/kt6s2019xp/ hosts over 5,000 picture postcard views of California and the Southwest taken by Burton Frasher in the 1910s–1950s. Among the many shots of landscapes and people are street scenes, offering a time-travel tour of early 20th-century American signmaking.
It's all offered free of charge to broaden access, but for those that can, a suggested $10 contribution to the running costs is appreciated: https://bl.ag/tip.
Please #Boost to help reach more people that might like to indulge in these adventures in sign painting.
A quality piece of pavement #lettering found in Larkspur, CA.
Think it's dilbert in #cursive#script, but could say Lilbert, but never heard that before
@rzeta0 I would recommend browsing the local timeline at typo.social where you'll find plenty of good stuff, and no doubt familiar faces from twitter: https://typo.social/public/local
Anyone know a good short video that demonstrates through action the differences between calligraphy and lettering (at least as they are most often broadly defined – written vs. drawn)?
We’re very excited about this new addition to our collection: a 1882 book from a jacquard weaving course in Lyon, France. As a manuscript, it’s all hand drawn and hand lettered, and it has loom punch cards and fabric samples tipped in. It also has hundreds of intricate diagrams and instructions for this semi-automated form of weaving. These wooden address numbers have followed me my whole life, from my family’s summer condo in Idaho, to the house across the street from my childhood home in Salt Lake City, to the Oakland building where @laureola and I live now. https://flic.kr/p/2oGpf8u
Still seeking the designer and manufacturer. They were most likely introduced in the early 1970s.
My eldest's latest adventures in letters is this self-initiated piece using aquabeads. They're now mounted onto this hand-bound booklet as a gift for her friend, Ona.
If this inspires you for your next creation, then there's more about the environmental disaster that are aquabeads at https://aquabeadsart.com.
For A Project™, I need to learn about the historical origins of #bitmap#fonts. Highly doubt these were first created on computers; where in the world have rectangular #tiles or #bricks carried a textual message? (The tiled signs in the #NYC subway are #mosaics, not based on a grid.) Where did bitmap fonts really start?
