Very excited to finally put out my work on #AAC (communication accessibility) devices for #AutisticAdults. Working with masters student Malathy Nagalakshmi during my postdoc at Penn, we did a deep dive into how AAC can be improved from both society & technology/#NLProc perspectives.
»The young generation has lost its life security«: The Frankfurter Rundschau (@FR) has just published an in-depth feature about our director Iryna Gurevych and her work on the use of #NLProc in mental health, especially for younger people.
Do you do AI research in story generation or interactive fiction playing generation? Do you have a cool narrative system that you want to show off but don't know how to?

I'd like to announce the new major release of STAM: Stand-off Text Annotation Model. This is standalone data model for annotation on text. It comes with various low-level tooling such as libraries for Rust, Python and various command-line tools. This is a big research software project I've been working on for the past year for #clariah at #knaw and which I hope might prove useful for others: https://annotation.github.io/stam
ACL giving up on anonymous peer review is probably just a step towards giving up pre publication peer review. #my2cents At these volumes, the process is broken anyway. 🤷♀️ #nlproc
"The ACL Executive Committee has voted to significantly change ACL's approach to protecting anonymous peer review. The change is effective immediately.
As a result, no anonymity period will be required for papers submitted for the Feb. 1, 2024 TACL deadline or the Feb. 15, 2024 ARR deadline. The submissions themselves must still be fully anonymized. However, authors may publicly post and discuss versions of the work elsewhere under their own names. (1/2)
Authors are cautioned not to overpublicize the work, since before accepting a submission, ACL will want to find qualified reviewers who can assess it without knowing who wrote it.
To learn about the full details of the changes and the reasons behind them, please read the report at https://www.aclweb.org/adm.../index.php/ACL_Anonymity_Policy
ACL thanks the working group that spent several months considering this issue and writing the report." #NLProc (2/2)
I've been thinking about program understanding, and about how to encourage #languagemodels to do compositional/verifiable #reasoning on program text ("statically").
If, as some recent literature suggest, transformer-based LMs are not more expressive than regexps, this line of thinking is doomed, but at least it could be a valuable heuristic and complementary to rigorous #formalverification. #machinelearning#nlproc
It's grad application season! For folks interested in North American linguistics departments with research in or adjacent to #NLProc, see this page: https://nschneid.github.io/nlp-in-ling/
Applications for Georgetown's Ph.D. in Computational Linguistics are due this Friday!
From an email I received this morning from the company that has been providing AV services to ACL events with the subject "How Can you Help Advance Open Science ?" Folks, videos ARE NOT ANONYMOUS. I will definitely not be approving this and caution all #NLProc researchers who have received similar messages from doing so. /1
