“This photo was taken by Nikita Teryoshin. It shows a VIP reception at a Swedish booth at an arms fair in Kielce, Poland, in 2016. Teryoshin spent eight years traveling to defense shows worldwide, capturing the surreal ways weapons are bought and sold. (…)
In the video, we break down the satire of this and other photos by Teryoshin and how the lampooning is even weightier because these arms expos evade public radar.” [Reading the Pictures]

Passing Time

A Photo Series by Sage Sohier

"During the isolation of the pandemic, I had the opportunity to revisit my archive of negatives and contact sheets from the 1980s, and discovered a number of interesting images that I had never printed. These photographs were made between 1979-1985 in a pre-digital, largely un-air-conditioned era, when people fled the heat of their houses to hang out in their yards and on the street. I notice a kind of relaxed sensuality in many of the pictures. Time moved more slowly; restlessness led to spontaneous play."

The Rocketgirl Chronicles: adventures in lockdown and space – in pictures

'During the pandemic, Melbourne was locked down six times. Desperate to keep his space-obsessed four-year-old occupied, Andrew Rovenko decided to explore space in the permitted 5km radius. The results can be seen in The Rocketgirl Chronicles, published by Setanta'

It goes without saying that the Vancouver Island marmot has good taste when it comes to photography books 😉

Arvo, Toots! Well, great excitement for me today - we picked up the for Dad and posted it off to my SIL in ! This was my first project in where I feel that someone close in my family will really get some shared joy from my work. The book was a lot of work, but worth it. I ended up making the whole book big, (12x16 hardcover, 90 pages) with large text (48 pt) and lots of white space for Dad to write in more memories if he wants to. I hope he likes it!

The first page of the photo book. A black and white portrait of the subject, with text next to it, saying the book was made with love.
A sepia photo of a five year old boy in a home made clown outfit. Text reads 5 years 2 months November 1944 St John’s Darlinghurst Fancy Dress Ball.

Arvo, Toots! Last night, I pressed the print button on the for Dad, and this arvo on the order I can see that it’s already been printed - so now I wait the 10 business days for it to arrive at the store and the inevitable forehead slapping when I realise I’ve left a typo in after all. Never mind, as we say in quilting, “Finished is better than perfect!” It ended up being a 90 page project, and that left out so much. Now I feel I should do one for Mum…

The Vancouver Island marmot is British Columbia’s sole endemic mammal species and the most endangered mammal in Canada. In my photo book, you will learn about the conservation efforts undertaken to save this amazing species from extinction through the words of dedicated experts and my photos.

Evening, Toots. Long day for us today - the car saga continues, still no repair, arrgh. Partner managed a big grocery shop after a Drs appointment via taxis and walking. I’ve been working on #FamilyHistory, the #PhotoBook for Dad (I’m up to his last year at HIgh School!) and decided last night that my #WritingProject needed a better system so I finally indulged and bought #Scrivener for the IPad. Plus I have #letters to write… And to think, my #MentalHealth Nurse worried I might be bored! 🤣

Moments of magic and bliss: Chris Burkard’s ocean photography

Arvo, Toots! So, #scrapbooking, #photography, #FamilyHistory friends in Australia: I want to make a #PhotoBook for my Dad from this treasure trove of recently discovered photos. His #Alzheimers is progressing, and he’d enjoy a physical book. #recommendations for services? Ideas? I’m thinking photos of his grandparents, parents, significant events in his life, etc. Please boost. (Wasn’t he a beautiful kid?! That’s him, in his Dad’s army hat, circa 1942)

👋 Hi, I'm Karl

I love and hate social media, but am trying to find a happy place to slowly share my photography as I work on it. With some hesitation, I consider myself an artist, though I would call myself a photographer first.

I'm also interested in software, novels, German, and most recently Magic: The Gathering. You might see posts about those things as well as my photography.
