@olena @ideogram Gender is easy to understand as an . There are two sets of unwritten rules. One of them you are supposed to VERY MUCH and the other one you are supposed to NEVER. This is supposed to be very important to you for reasons and it's supposed to be obvious to you which set of behaviors you want to do. Violating these unwritten rules is punished even more severely than violating the regular unwritten rules because these are more important.

@olena @ideogram Of course the official rulebooks say that, because allistics have the annoying habit of saying what they wish was true and meaning something completely different. What they really mean is that the penalties for violating some of the rules have been reduced or eliminated, and you can easily figure out which rules those are by paying attention to who gets away with what.

@olena @ideogram That said, not everyone who is is like that. One of my children has a very strong sense of gender and asked me a lot of questions about what they* could do and not do when they were little. I don't relate at all, but it makes them happy and it doesn't seem to hurt them at all, so good for them.

    Requirements to put in a job description to discourage or filter out autistic people:

    • Comfortable with ambiguity
    • Strong people skills
    • Good culture fit
    • Multitasking
    • A fast-paced dynamic environment
    • Bachelor's degree or better

    I see these things and think you don't want my >30 years of programming and machine learning experience, or my problem-solving skills and comprehensive knowledge that had people mistaking me for one of the team's PhDs, or my solutions that have proven patent-worthy. Your loss.

    I coined the phrase while reading your paper.

    The most marginalizing thing that neurotypicals do to us is the social rejection, of course, but the second most marginalizing thing they do is to tell us that our opinions, and even our senses aren't valid: "Don't cover your ears. That sound isn't that bad. Look at me in the eyes when I talk to you!"

    The second form is pretty closely related to the first. We're told that no one will treat us like human beings unless we hide our autism, and that's not entirely a lie.

    And now we have devices to teach us to compartmentalize the pain and look people directly in the eyes. Our marginalization is automated with robots.

    I'm not out as autistic to most people, so I'd prefer to stay pseudonymous, but you can cite me by my handle.

    Being hyper-abled and disabled are not mutually exclusive. That's why there are terms for people who exist at both ends of the ability/disability spectrum at the same time. "Twice exceptional", "idiot savant", "splinter skills", "spiky skill profile"... These are a few of the terms invented specifically to describe such a pattern. Autistic people, in particular, are likely to fit this pattern.

    We worry about providing Universal Basic Income because people might stop working, but here's a thought: maybe, just maybe, with a little financial security, people might actually pursue work they truly choose rather than work to just not die. Imagine that world for a moment.
