I went outside a number of times last night but could see no sign of the lights in the sky from here in Auckland. Mind you, there’s a new block of town houses obscuring our view to the South. Perhaps I should have been a nimby after all.

@jackyan @billbennett There are lots of photos from the Te Atatus. I saw pink and mauve at 6.30am pastel colours to the naked eye.

How are you with animals?

I tend to throw off the wrong vibe for people, but get along with even the iffy animals. Dogs that don't like most people warm to me.

Just wondering how much of that is autism and how much me. My dad hates animals.

CarolynStirling,
@CarolynStirling@mastodon.nz avatar

@actuallyautistic @EVDHmn @Uair I have had the same experience. Animals trust me. They have from my babyhood. I had a kitten as a 15 month old and my mother said she never had to correct me in my handling of my kitten. I attract animals even horses which I admit I’m scared of.

If the sky is dark where you are GO OUT NOW AND WATCH AN AMAZING AURORA!!! Northern Hemisphere or Southern Hemisphere get out now! Clouds marred the view before dawn at Hoopers Inlet in Dunedin NZ but the aurora was still incredible!

@iangriffin My friend in Middlemarch took a great photo this morning at dawn.

I have a (virtual) meeting with a potential therapist tomorrow morning. I was supposed to see them on Tuesday but I ended up going to see the GP instead. I was incredibly anxious about it, even though it was only supposed to be an informal conversation to see if I wanted to work with them. Now I will probably get anxious all over again tomorrow but I really must push through and meet them, because I desperately need some therapeutic input over my moods, my thoughts of death, my feelings about my future, and, particularly my feelings about my PhD (right now I cannot imagine ever wanting to go back)

CarolynStirling,

@purplepadma You go girl! A good therapist is literally a lifesaver. Hope this one works out for you.

Reading Empire of Normality by Robert Chapman. Highly recommend if you are interested in Mad and neurodivergent liberation. Anyway, it’s reminded me that my son was a toddler around the time of the great MMR Autism Scare. I had been so conditioned to think of autism as something tragic and absolutely to be avoided that I delayed giving him his MMR. Joke was on me, he was already autistic! Needless to say, my views have changed drastically as I have come to embrace the neurodiversity paradigm. Just thought it’s kind of funny in retrospect

CarolynStirling,
@CarolynStirling@mastodon.nz avatar

@purplepadma It was the same in our family until we started to get autism diagnoses across three generations. ADHD also. Definitely a genetic link not vaccine related.

CarolynStirling,

@purplepadma My dad too. Myself. A cousin, more than a few of dads grands and great grands. ADHD appears.

Our medical centre has just put up some of its fees ($63 a visit) and introduced "Note that appointments running over time will be charged at $20 per 5 minutes, including for community services card holders. A standard appointment only allows 10 minutes of consultation and 5 minutes for your clinician to make notes. Only one item can be addressed safely in a standard consultation." (NZ$)

What sort of charges do you experience where ever you are in the world?

CarolynStirling,
@CarolynStirling@mastodon.nz avatar

@leighelse @bananabob Our local pharmacy is now much more than a pharmacy. They do blood pressure checks, blood sugar level testing, consultations and dispensing of over the counter meds for minor ailments. Inoculations.

Have had a cold and chesty cough for seven days now since flying back from Sydney. Tested negative for Covid earlier this week, but as soon as I've got today's work done will take another test. Starting to have real doubts since it got worse at about the time I expected it to get better.

CarolynStirling,
@CarolynStirling@mastodon.nz avatar

@billbennett Very wise Bill. It’s a thing with Covid that people think they are getting better then Wham! Hope it’s just flu although that’s bad enough.

CarolynStirling,
@CarolynStirling@mastodon.nz avatar

@billbennett That’s what my sister had. The cough for her though, being already compromised with RA and Parkinsons turned into pneumonia. I found Manuka Honey the best cough meds when I had a cough all night from a virus. I just slowly swallowed a tspn full at a time. I kept the jar of honey by the bed.

I’ve had a nasty cold and cough that started 3 days after I flew back from Sydney. Today I’m feeling good enough to walk to the local pharmacy for cough medicine. Time to get tussed up.

CarolynStirling,
@CarolynStirling@mastodon.nz avatar

@billbennett I’d test for COVID just as a precaution. Some of the family started off with your symptoms and suddenly worsened a couple of days later after initially feeling they were on the mend.

Ok, this is intriguing. A famous person has been publicly accused of sexual assault. He hasn't been convicted of any such crime, indeed no charges have been laid. So he's innocent until proven guilty, right?

Yet in a trial by media, this person has already been declared guilty by YouTube, who have demonetised their channel. Also by a bunch of companies who are withdrawing ads from another platform where the person can still make money, to pressure the platform to demonetise them too.

(1/3)

CarolynStirling,
@CarolynStirling@mastodon.nz avatar

@strypey I cannot stand the person concerned for many reasons but the foremost is that he has a history of not paying his bills. He has sent many small contractors into bankruptcy. He is a fraudster.

Last time I get an Australia visa for my UK passport it took a couple of hours. This time it's been sitting unprocessed for 10 days. This really is a wake up call to get the New Zealand passport I've prevaricated over for the last 30 years.

I feel somewhat agitated in a hypomanic way that could easily flip into panic. I need to keep the evening low key and take some diazepam to try and keep a lid on things. I may not feel depressed anymore but now I have a different set of challenges

CarolynStirling,
@CarolynStirling@mastodon.nz avatar

@purplepadma You are so honest with us I must tell you we have multiple people with bi polar disorder in our extended family. They range from B.P 1 to Rapid cycling and BP 2. On the other side of the family there are multiple cases of Anxiety Disorders and Depression. Shocking gene pool eh? On the plus side we are a highly educated family regarding mental illness. Everyone has done very well and excel in Business, Art, Photography and the Trades. Most own their own businesses.
