I mean, they’re not wrong. Reddit graybeards and moderators are panning the stock plan before the IPO.

This is a world where stocks go up then are divided to punish late buy-in, then stocks are bought back to go private and there isn’t really any rhyme or reason to any of it except a handful of well-positioned folks will make millions and a large portion of everyryone else is paying excessive taxes and getting $32.05 from decades of stock ownership. (Enough for a dinner bill.) And that’s if they’re lucky. They could have worthless stock.

If Huffman thought this would create goodwill, it’s not working. The stocks aren’t being handed out for free, for starters, they’re receiving a “chance” to buy it. It also means for long-term Reddit users who can’t own any stock for various reasons, all of this is meaningless.

Nothing in this communication this enthusiastic kid has done to ruin NASA's reputation would matter weeks from now. Even if it went viral it could have been fixed with "Okay, about yesterday... You're not fired, but here's why that can't happen again... #1..." etc. She didn't learn anything by being fired, I promise.

It's a freaking internship. Most aren't paid, and those that are pale in comparison to a minimum wage job. And 90% of interns will never work at NASA again even if it goes well. All the reason this is a bad look on NASA's part.

    I've been very fortunate to find myself in a nice career.

    I know many people who haven’t had the same path and the weight of student loans is financially drowning them. I'm truly happy that this will do something to give back to people who put so much in, but can’t break out from underneath the system.

    This kind of policy won’t be coming from Republicans. Joe Biden has my vote.

    150,000 more student loan borrowers to receive debt relief beginning Wednesday:

    AI is scary, and it can do a lot of scary things. It is also amazing, and can do things like get a Covid vaccine out faster, help people with disabilities, and help us figure out problems faster, and more efficiently. AI is a tool, and like all tools can be used as a weapon. Should we stop progress, because of the possibilities?

    Also never ever ever forget none of this happens in a vacuum. The rich and powerful would love for you to be distracted by a tool, instead of the people wielding it. We cannot always control the rate of progress, but we can vote for people who want to regulate it.

    Cefr,
    @Cefr@beige.party avatar

    @RickiTarr Disinformation is rampant on the topic.

    Supporters conflate AI as several technologies that have little to do with each other. The most famous one (LLM) lacks any awareness past a query, and also cannot come to any conclusions of its own. Nobody has any answers for Generative AI relying on millions of artists' work, with AI proponents suggesting, "maybe corporations developing AI should be exempt from IP theft laws" as a fix. AI leaders are pressing the government to ignore actual problems to form committees and task forces on anticipating AI's dangers which nobody can conclusively establish that we are under any threat of at all... past what they seen in Sci-Fi films and read on TV Tropes.com.

    Opportunists (scammers) are buzzwording AI for everything. They're not Macros, it's AI. You're not programming in the cloud anymore, you're engineering AI. (Which the cloud itself is an abstraction for "somebody else's computer.") Good bye thin clients and kiosks, hello AI Terminals. CEOs are taking sales claims from corporations selling AI as a cover-all for every work problem. It is carte blanche to encourage layoffs while raising prices. (A practice which never ends well for any business.)

    As for me, the only question I have is simple: "The bottom fell out of NFTs pretty damn rapidly in less than three years of its existence. How long is this crap going to last?"

    I have yet to be convinced it's a tool past idle curiosity and niche situations. The stance of "this will be everything for everyone" is betting a lot on innovations that have yet to happen at all.

    How do you feel about physical touch? I mean this is the broad sense, not necessarily in a sexual way, but you can answer however you wish.

    Personally, I enjoy it a lot, and find it comforting, but only from really specific people. If strangers or people I don't know well want to hug me, it's okay, but I won't seek it out. I think handshakes are weird. Hey, you want to hold hands with a stranger for a short amount of time for some reason?

    Cefr,
    @Cefr@beige.party avatar

    @RickiTarr I grew up in a touch-starved family with seven siblings and a stepfather who was sent to jail for sexual abuse.

    I've had women, both romantic interests as well as friends call me out on the lack of touch on my part. (I'm not on the autistic spectrum, I try to do what a romantic partner asks but no further than what I'm told.) I don't seek any treatment nor try to learn what is appropriate with strangers and society, I am what I am.

    I don't touch people by default. That makes me a shit dance partner. I'm fine with that.

    I don't know why restrooms are so fucking hard.

    Solution for restroom problems via politics when your business doesn't have the funds/space to redo it:

    1. Put up a Round Bathroom sign with a man, woman, child inside it on all restrooms. If people seem confused, a nameplate that says "Unisex Bathroom" should straighten it up. If not, you got smart customers.
    2. Install a door lock (one sided with a service pin release in case someone locks themselves in and doesn't respond), and sufficient amenities for any biological need for anyone at any age.
    3. There is no step 3.

    Men who need to go and the traditional 'Men's Room' being occupied can simply use the other one. Women don't need to rush while using an empty men's room in fear that a man is waiting when she's through. If there's baby stations, any bathroom can be a family bathroom if you lock the door. Bathroom has a tampon dispenser and a 'men can' next to your toilet? If you don't have the associated parts, simply ignore them.

    Cefr,
    @Cefr@beige.party avatar

    @RickiTarr One interesting idea I read from someone who was into architecture — for new buildings stop making bathrooms for gender and make them for capacity: Large, Medium, Small. Large ones we all know. Mediums are the Family Bathroom. Small is the typical Water Closet: sink, pot, mirror, and nothing else (doesn’t have to “be” small: wheelchair accessible of course.)

    The trick: ALL of them have a locking entry door. Even the Large one. The whataboutisms can be answered by society at large. (Large Bathroom Etiquette: go in alone and lock the door? Enjoy the icy daggers from everyone in line on your way out.) And the building involved can mix them.

    Airports? Large and Small abound. Lounges, business class, and VIP ones more small than large.
    Hospital? Medium ones default for patient waiting areas, small ones in wards and to support staff.
    Schools? All three.

    Yes, urinals aren’t in that plan, but guys should look carefully at their shoes the next time they use one. No matter how ‘neat’ they try to be, there’s thousands of small drops proving otherwise.

    Okay, picking up from my video game post yesterday, I'm curious:

    When you play video games, rpgs, ect, where you get to choose your character, do you tend to choose a character of the same sex, the opposite sex, non-binary, anthropomorphic, or a mysterious 4th option?

    If you want to share screenshots of character builds I would enjoy that!

    Cefr,
    @Cefr@beige.party avatar

    @RickiTarr Female, because male characters I find boring.

    I play City of Heroes mostly. Boo: gender locked parts (boys can’t be pretty). Yay: there’s a Costume Creator that lets you select a different gender per outfit, so costume slot one can be female, slot 2 can be male, and slot 3 can be the game’s third gender, Humongous (still male.)

    @Cefr@beige.party avatar

    If Firefish is going to come back, Kainoa won't have a hand in it. They quietly handed over the keys to the repo to a maintainer... who has publicly stated they aren't a programmer and are just looking after commits. Not exactly a signal things are starting back up.

    https://git.joinfirefish.org/firefish/firefish/-/issues/10847

    Unless there is an announcement soon about someone taking up development again, I think it's safe to say Firefish is over as a Fedi platform.

    Optimism wants to say that someone will, but at this point even if someone does it'll be playing catch-up to the current state of affairs. It isn't possible for someone to come off of the street and say "I'll do it" and go back to the pace that was happening last summer immediately. (But it's not impossible for me to be wrong and six months from now someone does. I'm just not banking on it happening. Even the Firefish name itself might be too damaged in reputation to even take back up.)

    , , and are derivatives who are continuing onward with things. All three of them have disassociated with FF completely so it seems Misskey still has a future with non-Japanese users. (Iceshrimp even spent time on a new non triangular logo to further separate from Firefish.) Server admins who wanted to consider a Firefish instance but shied away from the drama last fall may want to follow those projects instead.

    If your fedi server is still on Firefish, don't be surprised if an announcement "were taking signups on our new Plombus server, in X months Fleeb will be decommissioned" comes down sometime soon. Internet services without recent updates are asking for trouble from exploits and vulnerabilities. Also, without an active FF developer to fix standing issues (or a skilled DB admin on your instance's behalf to whittle the database and schema to fit the new system as well as possible) a cut-over migration where users don't lift a finger isn't in the cards like the Calckey to Firefish migration last September. It likely will be up to you to decide to either move your account Mastodon style (no post migration, just your follower lists and a link back to the prior server) or to just start fresh.

    Sometimes people tell me I should do standup comedy and I try to explain that writing short Mastodon posts isn't the same as doing standup, but I just watched a little standup special and I think that if I insert a lot of unnecessary rambling sentences and things like "um" and "ya know?" and then add some awkward pauses for forced laughter, I could probably make this work.
