Periodic reminder I'm still looking for electronica bands with acoustic drums, either featured in their studio productions or live performances. Streaming platforms' matching algorithms can't be that specific, so any suggestion is welcome and as a starter point, here's Muriatic by Polynation.

@hypolite Does MEUTE count as electronica? I’m sure you already have Nerve with Jojo Mayer, yes?

Upon finding out 99% of NYU protesters were indeed students, Republican Councilwoman Vickie Paladino decided they all have to die.

It feels like Democrats should stop helping these people in their war on students and higher education?

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@gwynnion @bedast I can imagine her thinking she can claim it was just metaphorical, not literal, but surely enough people can see through that? It’s stochastic terrorism.

Also, is the word "bruja" in Spanish in any way related to the word "brouhaha"? Witches tend to cause unrest and disturbances, and such.

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@nebyoolae Interesting thought! Both brouhaha and bruja have uncertain histories, and even though there’s nothing suggesting one came from the other, it’s entirely possible they both came from the same roots.

We can agree to disagree on politics. We're all pagans here. But I don't like racism of any stripe- against "white kids" included. You weakened your (reactionary) argument with that. It smacks of Fox News.

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@Malleus There is no such thing as racism against white people. Racism is a matter of systemic oppression, and white people are never the systemic victims. Whiteness itself was invented as a way of creating an underclass. If you find it distasteful when someone dismisses “white kids”, think about why systemically they would feel that way, and ask yourself why it bothers you.

I would be curious to hear from anyone with a rice cooker, I am having a problem with preparing jasmine rice in my cooker, I use 3 cups water to one cup rice, and a shot of some kind of oil, usually olive oil. It has a really great flavor, but the rice is too soft! Am I cooking it for too long? Should I test it before the little lever comes up on my cooker that tells me it's done? Thanks for any advice or thoughts?

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@MsHearthWitch @Pawpower Agreed, I use 1.5 C water for 1 C white rice and 1.75 C for brown rice.

if anyone has any suggestions on how to make rugs stay put on their rug pads when my exuberant dogs run across them instead of coming up and getting jumbled (rug pad is staying flat). there's no real furniture to hold it down and I'm kind of balking at velcro but might be the right choice with these cheap cotton scrap rugs.

(I want the dogs to continue to be exuberant. I have no issue with them playing and running up here. it's their house too! this is their open space to wrestle in.)

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@xantha I use heavy duty double-sided tape to make floppy rugs stay on the pad. It works better with rubbery coated pads than the bare felt types. The downside is it means I can’t throw those rugs in the washing machine. For $$ there is a rug brand called Ruggable that solves all that. I recommend highly apart from the $$.

Just rewatched Beasts of the Southern Wild and goddamn if that isn’t one of my favorite movies of all time. I am aware of hooks’s criticism and I respect it, but for me the film’s magical depiction of the chaotically churning and burning cauldron of life and death far exceeds the tropes it may contain.

Some other sights around the gorgeous forested private property that I spent most of yesterday at 11:30AM-1:30AM.

I don't know what that wagon wheel thing is - does anyone know?

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@msquebanh @Adam_Cadmon1 The truck reminds me of my friend when I was little, her dad had a classic Studebaker in his front yard that he promised she could have when she turned 16 and got her license. By the time that happened, the interior had been completely overtaken by nature, and a whole tree grew up smack through the middle of it.

@Adam_Cadmon1 I run into this as a dog pro unfortunately often. Just the other day when someone found out I was a trainer they said “oh do you know so-and-so?” I didn’t, which is unusual cos I know most local dog pros. They said “she trains K9s for the PD” and I exaggeratedly replied THAT EXPLAINS WHY I DON’T KNOW THEM.

Cyrus,

@skinnylatte I worked there for a bunch of years and we used to have this guy come in and give free nutritional classes in the seating area. It was all woo like that. The final straw for me, where I got him banned from the store, was when he taught that “selenium cures AIDS”. His reasoning was that AIDS patients were deficient in Se, and sharks have high levels of Se, and “sharks don’t get cancer”, therefore… uhhh… And when I asked for proof, he referred me to his own website.

It only just now occurred to me that the song My Favorite Things is about dissociation. I wonder if that’s why it resonated so much with Coltrane.
#jazz

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@mrcompletely Hm, the premise of the lyric is “when something unpleasant happens, I simply think about a pleasant thing instead, and then I don’t feel so bad.” It’s pretty straightforward. No part of it talks about other ways of handling bad feelings. As far as Coltrane, I was stretching a bit. He constantly searched for new ways of expressing the inexpressible, and that led him to various drugs and religious thought. I wondered if he struggled with quotidian “reality” and pain.

For this reason I would like to change current Vernissage for Pixelfed client name. Something that you will like and connect with Pixelfed 😉.

On this occasion, please send me your suggestions on what the new Vernissage for Pixelfed could be called. This is an app created with ❤️, for you, and you can create a part of it.

@Lokjo @fatsam Maybe just a subtle language issue. In English the idea of “both sides” is used by fascists to make it sound like they have the same moral standing as the people they oppress. I just had a reaction to the phrase “whichever side you’re on”.
