    @Teri_Kanefield If I recall correctly, the people who took the data got access to the building and computers via a person who had legal right to be in the building.

    (Please only vote if you're in California!) - Should consideration be given to a ballot initiative to lay down rules for autonomous ride hailing vehicles ("robotaxis") in the state, given the lack of adequate controls being asserted by the existing regulatory authorities?

    @lauren I've said it before, the municipalities need to ticket and fine automated vehicles that block traffic. The fines need to be enough to hurt. Stopping in the middle of the road because the brittle software can't handle changes to the road system is not safe.

    I have yet to see a report indicating that any effort was made to activate the Hawaii emergency siren system. If you see one, please let me know. Speculation that it was only for tsunamis IS WRONG. Speculation that power failures prevented them from running is meaningless if no efforts were even made to activate the system early in the event. As noted below, WILDFIRES are specifically listed as one of the reasons the system would be activated. Please read it before other speculations about what it was or was not designed for!

    My understanding from comments of people who fled the fires is they spread much faster than people could run. I would not be surprised to find out the reason no warning was given is due to the command center not having enough information soon enough. By the time they had the needed information, it was too late.

    @lauren I will also mention Maui has only 100 fire fighters for the whole Island, and most were already fighting large wild lands fires in the midlands area. Those who were left had no chance to do anything against the rapidly advancing flames. I know fire trucks were lost, and I'd assume that would cut radio communications back to the fire department.

    On cell service, I understanding is it was already down before the Lahaina area fire started.

    What happens when you depend on mobile and Internet for everything? Disasters can happen. Reportedly Maui officials tried to use warnings sent to mobile phones to warn of the fire, but by then many cell towers were already dead. There's a siren system, but apparently they didn't activate it because it's designated for tsunamis only. Wonderful.

    @PJ_Evans @lauren Yep! Due to thunderstorms here in Iowa, most cell towers have some backup power to keep them on for a few hours after the power goes out. After that generators can take over.

    @lauren @PJ_Evans Or self destructs after running awhile. The only time I lost internet and phone at my farm during a 7 day long power outage was when the generator threw its piston through the optical router. The rest of the equipment kept going on battery. Internet and phone was back in under 4 hours.

    The big issue is what do the regulators require, and do when failure happens. Iowa knows how important phone and cell phone connectivity are in an emergency, and act accordingly.

    @atomicpoet I have my own religion called "Mother Earth Discordianism", named by a friend, and I love that the name misleads and pushes buttons. It has many base tenets like "We are all part of this biological entity called Earth.", "Embrace the chaos within" (refers to biochemistry), "Belief in deferentially abled beings." (look at dogs, chimpanzees, and humans.). New tenets are to be based on peer reviewed science.

    @gwynnion I don't think I ever was allowed to see in B&W. I was taught very young to understand all the hues, shades, tints, tones, and intensities of everything encountered and learned. Nothing is back and white, and even shades of gray often fail.
