Interested in politics, history, trail running, jazz and the weather, among other things. But I mostly offer up hit-or-miss iPhone pix. Plus triptychs.

Tell me the story of the last time you committed an act of kindness in 500 characters or less.

There’s nothing wrong with bragging about creating kindness. There’s nothing honorable about not sharing the joy of creating kindness.

We need to uplift and encourage people who create kindness in their daily lives.

So tell us your story. It doesn’t have to be something big. It can be something as simple as helping someone carry a bag of groceries.

How did you create kindness this week?

Have I missed something?

That brown swath off the Big Sur coast is a Hurricane-Force Wind Warning for Sunday. National Weather Service says it's a first.

70 degrees in January. Happens in the East Bay sometimes. This is from Las Trampas Peak west of Mount Diablo.

Hillside with green grass and oak trees is shown at a distance. A radio tower is on the ridge line. Blue sky with high clouds takes up the rest.

Interesting effect near the summit of Mt. Diablo in the Bay Area today.

I thought it was light being refracted through the old aircraft beacon on the mountain. But a weather blog commenter says it's actually an example of Brocken specter, which, to quote my friend Wiki, is "the magnified (and apparently enormous) shadow of an observer cast in mid air upon any type of cloud opposite a strong light source. ... (Often), a bright area called Heiligenschein, and halo-like rings of rainbow coloured light called a glory can be seen around the head or apperature silhouette of the spectre."

LA Times staffers say ~150 of their colleagues were laid off today in a Zoom webinar by HR with chat disabled and no Q&A.

@matunos @GhostOnTheHalfShell @w7voa The point of a CA news outlet having a reporter in DC is not to provide a watery version of the national news that the NYT and WaPo report. It's to cover what's happening in DC that specifically affects CA, which will interest the NYT and WaPo only occasionally or never. Are the feds going to jump into an environmental fight in CA over who gets what water? Is your local transit agency going to get a post-Covid ridership crash bailout? What's your local congressperson up to, something that will grab the NYT's attention only if your local congressperson is Nancy Pelosi or Kevin McCarthy?

I don't know who Shira Stein's count of 8 reporters includes -- Politico says the LAT's DC bureau is now down to 5 reporters, which perhaps means there's Stein for the Chron and 2 others for the whole rest of the state. For a state this huge and varied, that's not many.

@Hey_Beth Not a word about raising the $160,200-a-year cap on Social Security taxes. (Surprise.) Make $160,200 a year? Make $1 million a year? You pay the same amount in SocSec taxes.

Would have been nice if the moderator brought it up instead of obsessing on raising the retirement age.
