Many years ago I lived at a place with a ground level patio door, where we’d get daily visits from neighbourhood cats being curious and friendly… and having no responsibilities except sharing my time with them, I miss that

“Eight Words and a Verbal Slip Put Biden’s Age Back at the Center of 2024
A special counsel’s stinging report and an uneven White House appearance captured Democrats’ fears about President Biden and fueled Republicans as they try to cast him as weak.”

I’m SURE the NY Times will lead tomorrow with a big story about Trump’s many gaffes, right?

Right?

When I was a tyke there was this cough medication on our market that was produced by some American pharma company. Now, because medicine can be extremely harmful, it’s vital to make pediatric meds taste like shit. So they flavored it with anise oil, also known as the taste of black licorice.

It’s just that outside of the US, this flavoring is a delicacy and I stealthily sneaked me some extra cough medicine when I wasn’t supposed to have any.

Nowadays, my cough medicine is flavored with some kind of bitter citrus that isn’t grapefruit. Hnnnh! But at least I have impulse control to resist the urge now

    Mine is EVERYONE ON THE MOON IS ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL, by Julian K. Jarboe, which I have not yet read, followed closely by THEY DON'T MAKE PLUS SIZE SPACESUITS, by Ali Thompson, which I have read.

    I’ve repeatedly said that when it comes to the gig economy, you can have

    • low prices
    • well paid workers
    • profitable services

    Pick two.

    As Wall Street now expects profits, if a law requires paying workers well prices go up. Then supply & demand means usage and pay go down.

    Kierkegaanks,
    @Kierkegaanks@beige.party avatar

    @carnage4life You just need to have enough capital to do all three until your competition goes out of business and you’re too big to challenge before you take it public. Like the good old days of monopolistic capitalism

    What is one of your best rainy day memories?

    My Cousin Sarah and I got to stay at our Great Grandma's house together, and it was raining, and she told us we didn't have to be cooped up, we could go play in the rain. This was very exciting, because it's not something our parents would have gone for. So we twirled around and leapt in puddles and licked raindrops off rose petals. When we were done our Gran put us in a hot bath, and made us hot tea and treats. She brought out a big bag of costume jewelry and let us go through it, we tried everything on, and thought we were very fancy, and she let us keep our favorite ones.

    Could our Universe be a simulation? How would we even tell?

    Simulations all the way down—the philosophical debate on the nature of our Universe.

    @anthropy @arstechnica What use would the simulation be if it cheated with physics?

    Kierkegaanks,
    @Kierkegaanks@beige.party avatar

    @anthropy @arstechnica So they can reproduce thoughts, sentience and self, but the fundamental role of the speed of light in our reality is an erroneous artefact?

    Anyway. Then it’s not a simulation like how the sims is not a simulation, and subsequent layers in the premise would be impossible because of approximation degradation.

    Kierkegaanks,
    @Kierkegaanks@beige.party avatar

    @anthropy @arstechnica i’m not sure i understand what you mean to say

    Imagine you’re a pre-heliocentric astronomer who is observing the inexplicable retrograde movement of mercury, and you have an innate understanding of what later becomes the scientific method. Do you think that the movement of mercury is due to some aspect of reality you don’t understand yet, due to some external influence of the simulation hypothesis or God and angels?
