There’s been a lot of speculation around what Threads will be and what it means for Mastodon. We’ve put together some of the most common questions and our responses based on what was launched today:

https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/07/what-to-know-about-threads/

KimSJ,
@KimSJ@mastodon.social avatar

@Mastodon The fact that Threads is not available in EU at launch causes me to worry. EU is generally stronger on consumer protection than most other regulators. What EU requirement are they failing to meet?

A really annoying dark pattern I see over and over:

  • start using an app or service
  • agree to receive notifications such as “your car is here” or “someone replied to you”
  • time passes
  • app or service starts abusing notifications to get me to engage via promotions or even plain advertising

Often my easiest recourse there is to turn off the app’s notification privileges.

Abusive, short-sighted, and dumb. You’re never getting that permission back.

KimSJ,
@KimSJ@mastodon.social avatar

@sean So many businesses lose sight of their reason to exist, which should be to provide goods or services that consumers need. (I avoid saying ‘customers’, because there are so many businesses whose customers are advertisers, not consumers.)

Short-term greed inevitably destroys reputation and long-term viability. Often this is driven by investors who don’t understand and don’t care, as long as they get a quick, profitable exit.

I feel like some (otherwise reasonable) people are using Twitter more than ever and it’s really starting to freak me the FUCK out.

It’s like watching a crowd of people stare directly into the sun. Why are you not blinking, babe? Are you under a curse? Are you pod people? How can I end this and get you treatment???

KimSJ,
@KimSJ@mastodon.social avatar

@ryanhoulihan It’s laziness. Twitter is designed to pleasure lazy people. Alternatives like Mastodon require users to create their own algorithms. Many people don’t have the time, energy, inclination and skill to do that. Perhaps Mastodon needs a sister app that emulates Twitter’s lazy mode? Or the registration process could allow users to create a list with interesting hashtags (chosen from a tick list)?

KimSJ,

@GottaLaff The board of any company, including oil and gas companies, has a fiduciary (i.e. legally obligated) duty to maximise profits for their shareholders. The only thing that will get them to change course is regulation which makes it too expensive to continue their current business model. Carbon tax, for example.

All you need to know about how rentier works in one bit of data:

The UK's water firms were privatised without any outstanding debts over thirty years ago.... now, the privatised (regional) have around £62bn in debt, but are still failing to deliver an adequate service.

If that debt has not been used to invest sufficiently in the , which the firms now (grudgingly) admit,, you might wonder where has it gone?

I leave that for you to guess!

KimSJ,
@KimSJ@mastodon.social avatar

@SeaMonster @ChrisMayLA6 ‘Glazering’ is a word we need in the English language… bleeding institutions dry by loading up debt to pay huge dividends. It’s a far more effective way for the parasites to get richer than old-fashioned asset stripping, and probably even more destructive.

    @notjustbikes The thing about Mastodon is that you have to drive it… searching/using hashtags, following everyone you find interesting, creating and watching lists (web interface ‘advanced’ mode allows you to pin lists, which helps a lot, and lists can be of people or hashtags). If you don’t have the time, energy or inclination to do that, sites with algorithms are your better option. If you do work at it, Mastodon rapidly becomes far superior, because you’ve effectively created your own lists.

    For anyone even vaguely interested in sussing @lisamelton’s previous incarnation out, why?

    Said incarnation is of neither interest or value to you, and no, “curiosity” does not justify it. Lisa is Lisa, and her current self is both awesome and the only Lisa we need to care about.

    If you feel the need to poke around, you really need to do some reflection on why, because it is not a good impulse.

    KimSJ,
    @KimSJ@mastodon.social avatar

    @bynkii @AlwaysAutumn @lisamelton Something it took me longer to figure out than it should have is what pronouns to use when talking about historical events (Walter/Wendy Carlos’s early work, for example). My view now is that the current pronouns have always been correct, even if we didn’t know it at the time. So, we should talk about Wendy Carlos’s early work, for example, as created by her. Simple, when one gets it! 🤦

    @Radical_EgoCom I’ve been noodling the possibility of legislating pay rise equality (including bonuses). If the CEO gets a certain percent pay rise, all others in the organisation should get a bigger percent pay rise. Ideally, the bigness should be increased the further from the CEO’s pay scale people are. We need to reverse the pay differential growth!

    Your “community” is worthless to them unless it delivers Kidney Money.

    They cannot just “decide” to not enshittify the community you mistakenly believed was yours. No appeal to justice or fairness will work, unless accompanied by a donor kidney or two.
