Album of the Day 215: Heaven's Youth by STRFKR

https://starfucker.bandcamp.com/album/heavens-youth

2012 synthpop album consisting of demo versions of all of the songs off of Reptilians. While the final versions on Reptilians are more polished, there's something really neat about hearing these earlier, rougher recordings.

My picks: "Jackalope (Julius) (Van Mix)," "Astoria - Original Recording," "Quality Time - Skeletron Mix)"

Alright , I want your thoughts. One of my friends is selling off his synths and pedal collections to get a more focused setup. I'm thinking of nabbing a few for myself to add to my own excessive collection. 😆

What I want to know: what would everyone else choose to grab before he sells them off?

What I have, for reference: https://mstdn.games/@LadyMarth01/110811157643903929

Oh snap, a slice of nostalgia launched on Steam today. Submachine was a series of Flash point-and-click adventure games. Submachine: Legacy remasters the series, updating art, adding some new content, and combining it all into one package.

I rarely buy games at launch, but I'm awful tempted. I'm glad to see things like this or the Cube Escape Collection coming out to keep these classic Flash games available.

Album of the Day 173: Virtual Burnout by @lukhash

https://lukhash.bandcamp.com/album/virtual-burnout

2023 chiptune synthwave album from Edinburgh, Scotland. Some of the best bleeps and bloops available.

I thought for sure "The Kingdom" was going to be a remix/cover of "Never Gonna Give You Up" based on the intro. 😆

My picks: "Keygen," "The Kingdom," "Demoscene"

Album of the Day 158: Animals by Pink Floyd

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX8MNSINSuA&list=OLAK5uy_kOf4fViqHyzRqgXYXcv29IzdahokdeZdE&index=1

1977 prog rock album from one of the all time greats. Kind of the red-headed stepchild of Pink Floyd's mainstream peak. It's a solid album that suffers mostly from being surrounded by some of the greatest albums of all time.

Fun fact: David Gilmour played bass on both "Pigs" and "Sheep," with bassist Roger Waters playing rhythm guitar instead.

My picks: "Dogs," "Pigs (Three Different Ones)"

Another is here, so I'll recommend checking out IsThereAnyDeal and Augmented Steam.

IsThereAnyDeal (ITAD) tracks game prices across multiple stores, letting you find which one's cheapest and track how the current price stacks up to historic prices.

https://isthereanydeal.com/

Augmented Steam is a browser extension that embeds price information from ITAD into Steam Store pages, and so much more.

Album of the Day 94: The Cover Up (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by The Protomen

https://theprotomen.bandcamp.com/album/the-cover-up-original-motion-picture-soundtrack

2015 rock concept album/cover album from Nashville, Tennessee.

The Protomen are a rock band loosely themed around the Mega Man series, with multiple concept albums. This album is solely covers, and most might just be better than the originals.

My picks: "No Easy Way Out," "In The Air Tonight," "The Trooper," "Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPCLFtxpadE&list=OLAK5uy_mr3aLJuPJvJve1bSwRl-8W4iN8uhGOr80&index=1

1971 prog rock album from London, England. Okay, everyone loves "Roundabout." But where's the love for the rest of the album? It's an incredible album the whole way through.

Except for "Cans and Brahms." Feel free to skip the "pesky contracts prevented a Rick Wakeman original" track. 😆

My picks: "South Side of the Sky," "The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)," "Heart of the Sunrise"

Album of the Day 236: After the Gold Rush by Neil Young

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ppMcqsg0Sw&list=OLAK5uy_l61knFHCT9-JvA88E172MSuaGZupcQwSc&index=1

1970 folk rock/country rock album. The front half of this album has an incredible run of some of the best of Neil Young's work—not to say the back half is bad by any means. "Tell Me Why" might be my favorite Neil Young song overall.

My picks: "Tell Me Why," "Southern Man," "Don't Let It Bring You Down"

Album of the Day 188: Zombie by Fela Kuti

https://felakuti.bandcamp.com/album/zombie-1976-77

1977 (''76 in Nigeria) Afrobeat album. Critical of the Nigerian military, the success of this album led to the military attacking Kuti's commune.

My picks: "Zombie," "Mr. Follow Follow"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyOfYE5cqNk&list=PLVxakxoWul5V3M8awBfeQnboZN_fqkEPS

2000 (2001 UK/NA) plunderphonics/hip hop/nu-disco album from Australia. An absolutely impressive production, cleverly blending hundreds of samples into songs that smoothly transition from one idea to the next.

My picks: "Since I Left You," "Electricity," "Frontier Psychiatrist," "Etoh"

2023 downtempo/ambient collab EP from Canada (Socool) and Germany. (Lehto) Pretty relaxed vibes overall, even on the most active track.

Album of the Day 161: M8 by @laamaa

https://laamaa.bandcamp.com/album/m8

2022 synthwave/chiptune album from Finland. Composed entirely on the Dirtywave M8 tracker. Should probably be included in the marketing materials for the M8, because it's an impressive album that's certainly left me interested in the device. Not that I really need to be buying any more equipment! 😂

My picks: "bells," "3am," "revontuli"

Album of the Day 63: The Disintegration Loops by William Basinski

https://williambasinski.bandcamp.com/album/the-disintegration-loops

The Disintegration Loops is a four-part series of ambient albums, consisting of old tape loops that were deteriorating as they were being read, gradually changing the sound as it goes.

The recordings were completed on September 11, 2001, with the album covers consisting of stills from video he recorded at sundown from his Brooklyn apartment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqPC-BkylxA&list=OLAK5uy_nzNqlLAs3PLitt_FR1-_pO-1Vswhe8ff8&index=1

1959 cool jazz album. Notably uses a variety of time signatures, rather than sticking with the tried-and-true 4/4. (Not that there isn't 4/4 on the album.)

My picks: "Blue Rondo à la Turk," "Take Five," "Pick up Sticks"

Album of the Day 148: Time Trax Soundtrack by Tim Follin

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cb8bEGqQWVA

So bear with me here. Time Trax was a TV series that ran 1993-94. In 1994, a video game based on the series was released for the SNES.

This isn't that soundtrack. This is the one for the unreleased Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version of the game, with music by the great Tim Follin, who pushed hardware to its limits for games like Solstice and Silver Surfer for NES, or Plok! for SNES.

I know plenty of others have mentioned it, but Half-Life was updated for it's 25th anniversary and is available for free on Steam.

Valve has also made a one hour documentary on the development of Half-Life with Secret Tape, which is run by Danny O'Dwyer of NoClip.

More info, video, and store page on the 25th anniversary page:
