Just remember this one fact. You don’t need to imagine what Christian nationalists want to do to the entire country. All you have to do is learn what they’ve done to non white people. A cursory reading of the residential boarding schools (driven by the churchiest of churchy folks) and its impact on native peoples is all it should take to convince you that Christians in power do evil things to those they want to subjugate.

People don’t realize the scope of the wars the United States fought against indigenous peoples. From 1776 to 1890 the cost was $969 million dollars, over $40 trillion in today’s dollars.

From Sand Creek to Wounded Knee (1863 to 1890) the cost was $250 million, equivalent to $5 trillion dollars.

For context the US spent $4 trillion in today’s dollars during WW2.

I had two very different conversations yesterday. Almost opposites. One was with a young woman who is now curator of indigenous collection of a local prominent museum. And her daily struggle sifting thru crates and crates of unindexed material and bodily remains that belong to a tribe. She is Pueblo de Isleta and the days are heavy. There are toys taken from the still warm hands of children trampled by US Cavalry. Someone’s great grandmother’s bones in a box. There is no equivalent to how badly remains of indigenous have been treated by the United States of America.

And the second was with a friend of twenty plus years, non-indigenous, who refused to allow that “let’s powwow” is problematic, as it is now common parlance. Even when I explain that this is a word and a set of ceremonial customs that describes a very large gathering of tribes, he still felt entitled to literally colonize the word and have it mean “quick huddle.”

And it dawns on me that a very large portion of non indigenous friends seem to think along the same lines, and it depresses me. The way that knowing that statistically speaking, 50% of the white people you meet voted for Trump.

Do you know about starlight tours? It’s when Canadian cops pick up indigenous people at night in the dead of winter, drive them out to the prairie, and leave them to freeze to death. This practice was still happening in 2003.
